Chemical Brothers, Don't Think - Live From Japan Album Review

Earlier this year, The Chemical Brothers became the first artists of their kind to release a four-dimensional movie of a live performance in cinemas only. Recorded last July at the Fuji Rock festival in Niigata, Japan, 'Don't Think' is a visually interactive documentary that captures the essence of The Chemical Brothers live performance in every way possible. Having witnessed the cinematic experience at Nottingham's Showcase in February alongside a smattering of hardcore fans and passers by, its one of those films that demands to be seen, perhaps more importantly, in the right surroundings. Directed by Adam Smith, whose previous credits range from overseeing episodes of Dr Who and Skins to music videos for The Streets as well as providing visuals for The Chemical Brothers first ever gig in 1994, 'Don't Think' is a timeless collection of footage highlighting the euphoric intensity of one of the UK's most consistent live acts these past two decades.

Following on from the initial film, the official release of 'Don't Think' comes as a DVD & CD double-pack that is a must-have for anyone remotely interested in The Chemical Brothers. Aside from the two discs, the elaborate packaging features a selection of stills taken from the live footage, and comes in the shape of an ornate, hardback case. While the audio CD breaks the concert down into eleven segments, leaving out Junior Parker's sophisticated intro cover of The Beatles 'Tomorrow Never Knows' and 'It Doesn't Matter' from the band's breakthrough sophomore record 'Dig Your Own Hole', the DVD captures their festival headline slot in its entirety.

From Parker's introductory piece to the pulsating 'Another World' and 'Do It Again' that open the show, it's a non-stop hyperactive array of dancing marshmallow men, lasers, floating fruit and multi-coloured shapes. And that's just on the big screens situated behind Ed Symons and Tom Rowlands, the Brothers themselves. However, what sets 'Don't Think' apart from every other live concert given an airing on celluloid is that it doesn't just stop there. Full frontal shots of the duo's stage show only accounts for about one third of 'Don't Think'. The accompanying footage for 'Get Yourself High' takes you into Symons and Rowland's confined spaces on stage, traversing the pair from every angle as though the viewr is interactively hitting every note with them. And then there's the audience footage, much of which focuses around a pretty young Japanese girl whose facial expressions kind of take us through every single voyage of what it's like to be at such an event, chemically enhanced or otherwise, from the adrenalin rush of the build up to the sheer ecstasy of several thousand hands in the air for 'Swoon', until the post-rave comedown greets 'Superflash' in the film's home stretch.

Highlights arrive thick and fast. The aforementioned 'Superflash' introduced with a fearful clown's face insisting "You are my children now!" to close-up cataclysmic screams from selected audience members; the smooth segue from the band's 'Leave Home' anthem into 'Galvanize', the only noticeable link being the instinctive war cry of "Don't look back." Elsewhere, graphics appear then flicker out of focus before returning as something entirely unrelated altogether. The only thing that's missing is long time favourite 'The Private Psychedelic Reel' but when you've a back catalogue as exhaustive as what The Chemical Brothers possess, it would be nigh on impossible to squeeze everything into just over eighty minutes.

As an ambitious statement of intent in its own right, 'Don't Think' is streets ahead of anything else of its kind. As a document celebrating the unflappable genius of arguably dance music's most forward thinking innovators, it's simply unmissable.

9/10

PFT: Police report points to road rage for Dumervil

357316_display_imageGetty Images

At a time then some in the media would wag their fingers at players who try to get more money for the risks they assume, here?s another example of why players should get what they can, when they can, however they can.

Former Packers cornerback Craig Newsome battled through a variety of serious and less-serious-but-still nasty injuries during his career, emerging with an addiction to painkillers.

?You?d get on the plane and they?re handing out beer and pills,? Newsome tells Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.? ?It?s like, ?OK, party time.?? Really.? Every player that is either asking for them or says, ?This is hurting.?? It?s like ?OK, here?s a bag of them.??

Dunne chronicles the various scars on Newsome?s body.? He has tiger-claw scars on his chest from Jerry Rice?s cleat, which got under Newsome?s shoulder pads.? He has a scar on each knee ? one from a torn ACL in 1997 and one from hitting the turf so hard in 1998 that he could see bone.

The worst comes from a trio of ?trashed? discs in his back, which sparked an addiction that spawned doctor-shopping and ultimately forged prescriptions.

?You know it?s completely wrong what you?re doing,? Newsome said of his efforts to get more and more pills.? ?But it?s telling you, ?Do it, do it, do it.?? You need it.? ?Get it, get it, get it.?? It?s like, ?OK, [expletive] it.?? Then you walk in there and you?re on pins and needles.? You?re watching him and seeing if he?s going to get it.? You just want to get in and get out.

?Freaking get out of Dodge and have your little stash.? It?s the same old routine.?

And it?s the same old routine for many other former players.? With head injuries becoming the focal point when it comes to the men who made the game what it now is, it?s important to remember that plenty of them have a far wider range of afflictions.

Yes, they signed up for it.? Yes, they gladly assumed the risk.? Yes, they would do it again.

But it underscores the fact that any of the current players who can put the squeeze on their teams and get paid should do it, any way they can.

Senior Care Philadelphia

By Renee

Help finding senior care in Philadelphia, PAPrimary caregivers, which are often family members, miss out on many years of enjoying the company of their senior aged loved one in their Philadelphia homes. Seniors who are cared for by an adult child or grandchild will miss out on many of the fun and relaxing times when he or she is providing the senior care in Philadelphia.? It can be extremely frustrating when just one person in a family is expected to be the primary caregiver of senior aged loved one, while the rest of the family gets the best of the time with a senior aged loved one. Those who are not primary caregivers of a senior aged loved one may be able to merely visit on occasion or as they see fit or have time, but the family members or friends who are the primary caregivers will not be able to spend time upon their choosing. Primary caregivers will be in a senior aged loved one?s Philadelphia home on a as-needed basis and will be providing senior care whenever it is needed. Those family members and friends who do not have the responsibility of providing care for a senior aged loved one will be free to come and go without worry in the senior aged person?s Philadelphia home.

This can cause animosity between family members and friends of a senior aged person. Often, the responsibility and burdens of caring for a senior lie on just one person, while the rest of the family and friends are able to rest easy knowing that their loved one is being care for by someone else. It is not always a fair situation to the primary caregiver.

Early on in a senior care plan, a discussion between the senior aged person and his or her family and friends should be had. This conversation should determine as a senior aged loved one is no longer able to perform all the daily living activities on their own, who will become the primary caregiver and who will also assume the supporting roles in providing senior care. Should this discussion not take place and the roles of the senior aged person?s family and friends are not clearly outlined, the roles may become defined as time goes on. One person or another will become resentful that he or she has too much or too little responsibility while providing senior care in Philadelphia.

Prepare with your family and friends how your senior aged loved one will receive care and establish the roles and responsibilities in providing senior care to your loved one before it becomes a point of contention between your family and friends. Senior aged people should also communicate amongst their family and friends and ask for care and assistance from them where it is needed. Senior aged people should not rely too heavily on just one primary caregiver. Effective senior care is at its best when a primary caregiver is given breaks in between providing senior care. Although the primary caregiver, which is a family or friend, may take pride and sleep well knowing that he or she is caring for their senior aged loved one; it can become overwhelming if there isn?t any support from other family and friends. Senior care is something that should be a group effort and established roles are necessary to properly care for a senior aged loved one in their Philadelphia home. Having the discussion before there is tension, a burden is created for a primary caregiver or family members are feuding can help a senior to enjoy their later years and families stay together. Philadelphia senior care is not easy and may require lots of hands in ensuring the proper care of a senior aged loved one in their Philadelphia home.

You do not appear to have included a 'Time Setting' in your introduction, at first I thought it was a fantasy style sword and sorcery setting until the one line about 'Electrical expenses.'

Is this a modern or Medieval style roleplay?

Ky. woman fights porn companies' anti-piracy suits

(AP) ? It's a common tactic for pornography producers trying to protect their product from online piracy: They sue unknown "John Does" who illegally download movies, then go to Internet providers to learn their true identities and collect.

Hundreds of porn companies have filed thousands of lawsuits across the country in recent years. Often, representatives will call up the defendants, offering quick settlements of $1,000 or $5,000 to avoid facing $150,000 claims and the embarrassment of being publicly outed.

Some defendants in the lawsuits are pushing back, arguing that they're being squeezed for quick settlements even when they claim to have never downloaded anything.

A Kentucky woman, Jennifer Barker, is suing the five companies that targeted her and is seeking class-action status to hold the companies accountable for harassing calls for settlements.

The five companies, out of California and London, have filed more than 500 lawsuits in 17 states against John and Jane Does in recent years.

Barker's attorney, Ken Henry of Louisville, who filed the lawsuit, estimated 500,000 people have been sued or gotten calls from representatives of the companies since 2007.

"Nobody wants their name associated with downloading porn ... " Henry said, giving the example of a typically graphic movie title.

Among those being sued were 57-year-old Josip Gotvald, a Croatian immigrant living in Tempe, Ariz. When Gotvald received a notice that he defaulted and lost a copyright lawsuit, he didn't know what it meant and hadn't ever heard of the company suing him, Raw Films, or the film he was accused of downloading, "Raw Rescue."

"I have never used a computer, much less used one to download a movie," Gotvald wrote in an affidavit.

Henry and other critics call the lawsuits "copyright trolls," a tactic used to extract quick cash settlements from people who have no connection to any downloaded movie but want to avoid having their names associated with porn.

Two of the companies, K-Beech, Inc., and Third Degree Films, both of Chatsworth, Calif., did not return repeated emails seeking comment. Contact information for the other three companies named in Barker's suit ? Patrick Collins, Inc., of Canoga Park, Calif., Malibu Media of Malibu, Calif., and Raw Films of London ? could not be located.

Marc Randazza, a Las Vegas-based attorney, has represented adult film companies in protecting their copyright from online downloaders. The filmmakers are generally small businesses who can't make money if online users are taking their product for free, he said.

"All it produces is copyrighted material. If you steal that from them, what do they have?" Randazza said. "Whether you like pornography or not, diversity of entertainment is part of what America is all about."

The lawsuits follow a general pattern: The film company sues a series of "John Does" and "Jane Does" identified only by Internet provider numbers, then seeks to subpoena the Internet provider for the subscriber's name. Once the company has the name, representatives call the subscribers and ask for a settlement ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 and threaten to file a $150,000 lawsuit for each copyrighted download that would name them publicly as someone who was associated with a pornographic film company.

Frequently, the film companies band together and seek a waiver of court fees for the lawsuits, minimizing their costs and making any money collected from the calls strictly profit.

Henry described the lawsuits as a business model that's probably more profitable than making films.

"It's brilliant in one sense of the word," Henry said. "But, it's wrong. It's just absolutely wrong."

Some federal judges are starting to agree and push back. Magistrate Judge Gary R. Brown in the Eastern District of New York pointed out how unreasonable the assumptions made by the film companies are in a ruling handed down in May in a case involving K-Beech.

The judge cited three "John Does" in one of the cases before him. Each had reasons or proof that they didn't or couldn't have downloaded the porn in question. One was at work, another was an octogenarian with "neither the wherewithal nor interest" in such a download, while a third found copying such a film contrary to her "religious, moral, ethical and personal views."

"The assumption that the person who pays for Internet access at a given location is the same individual who allegedly downloaded a single sexually explicit film is tenuous, and one that has grown more so over time," Brown wrote. "It is no more likely that the subscriber to an IP address carried out a particular computer function ? here the purported illegal downloading of a single pornographic film ? than to say an individual who pays the telephone bill made a specific telephone call."

Henry, the Kentucky attorney, agrees and notes that unsecured wireless accounts can leave open the possibility of people tapping the network and downloading anything they want.

"You don't know who is using the Internet on which computer," Henry said.

Randazza said generally, when an Internet provider number shows up, either the person who signed on to the service or someone connected to them has downloaded the movie in question.

"I'm not saying it's a 100 percent hit rate," Randazza said. "But, it is so rare you actually find someone who had no connection to it at all."

Gotvald, who set up a wireless account for his college-aged children, said in his affidavit that someone must have linked to his wireless network.

"I believe that a neighbor or passer-by access my wireless Internet connection and used it to download Raw Films' movie Raw Rescue," Gotvald wrote. "I have never seen any movie that could be the sort of movie I understand Raw Rescue to be, nor would I want to."

Monday Night F*ckball indeed. While we were at De Kat, Birre randomly cycled by. I hadn't seen her in 11 years or so.

Birre is our Dutch classmate from our Italian class in Siena, Italy, back in 2000. Her existence (and attendant dorky coolness) was the impetus for us visiting Amsterdam for the first time for New Year's 2000/2001, thus setting in motion whatever further machinations led to us eventually moving here. She turns 30 on Sunday. 30. Time is flowing like a river.

Rare glimpse into the origin of species

ScienceDaily (July 10, 2012) ? A new species of monkey flower, created by the union of two foreign plant species, has been discovered on the bank of a stream in Scotland. Genetic changes in this attractive yellow-flowered hybrid have allowed it to overcome infertility and made it a rare example of a brand new species that has originated in the wild in the last 150 years. Thousands of wild species and some crops are thought to have originated in this way, yet only a handful of examples exist where this type of species formation has occurred in recent history.

The ancestors of the new plant were brought from the Americas as botanical curiosities in the 1800s and were quickly adopted by Victorian gardeners. Soon after their arrival, they escaped the confines of British gardens and can now be found growing in the wild, along the banks of rivers and streams. Reproduction between these species produces hybrids that are now widespread in Britain. Yet, genetic differences between the two parents mean that the hybrids are infertile and cannot go beyond the first generation.

Dr Mario Vallejo-Marin, a plant evolutionary biologist at the University of Stirling, has documented the first examples of hybrid monkey flowers that have overcome these genetic barriers and show fully restored fertility. This fertile hybrid derived from 'immigrant' parents represents a new species, native to Scotland. Dr Vallejo-Marin has chosen to name this species Mimulus peregrinus, which translates as 'the wanderer'. The species is described in the open access journal PhytoKeys.

'The two American monkey flowers are unable to produce fertile hybrids due to differences in the amount of DNA present in each species, the equivalent of getting a sterile mule from crossing a horse and a donkey', said Dr. Vallejo-Marin. 'However, in rare cases, duplication of the entire hybrid DNA, known as polyploidization, can balance the amount of DNA and restore fertility. Our studies suggest that this is what has happened here.'

The discovery will help scientists to understand how new species form. It is thought that many existing plant species including crops such as wheat, cotton and tobacco may have originated in a similar way, but finding examples of this process in action is rare. 'This is an exciting opportunity to study evolution as it happens,' said Vallejo Marin. 'We do not yet know how common the new species is or how well it will fare, so the next step will be to find out its distribution and whether its ecological characteristics, allow it to colonise environments that cannot be currently exploited by its parents.'

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: God Bless America and Barbarella

Plus, a Willem Dafoe thriller, a quirky indie bomb, and a Tom Cruise winner.

Choices this week were pretty thin, so we've only got a few movies to talk about, including three new releases and two noteworthy reissues. First, we've got Bobcat Goldthwait's latest, a wilderness thriller starring Willem Dafoe, and a failed attempt at a quirky coming-of-age story. Then, we round things out with Blu-rays for an early Tom Cruise vehicle and a sexy cult classic. See below for the full list!

Instructional technology and college education ? Exponential Book

In this op-ed on the New York Times, Jeff Solingo, editorial director of the Chronicle of Higher Education points to a few concrete, urgent actions that universities and colleges across North America should take, in order to weather the financial crisis affecting institutions of higher education.

When it comes to education, I find myself consistently siding with the ?conservatives?. It is not that I dislike change per se ? quite the opposite, if anything; and there is no reason why teaching, and more generally the way society organizes and administer the education of its youths, should not be constantly evolving, in a way mirroring cultural and economic transformations. However, I also think that due to its very importance, education is something with which we should tinker as little as possible, and only when hard evidence warrants it. Making changes to the educational system requires time (measured in decades), not only in terms of sheer implementation, but especially when it comes to assessing their effectiveness.
The damage imparted by an educational reform ultimately deemed flawed, on a number of generations, is a terrible price to pay to social experimentation. This is why education leaders and politicians should adopt a healthy skepticism, and embrace the hippocratic ?First, do no harm? motto of medicine.

Perhaps this is why I am wary of some of the recipes suggested by Solingo in his op-ed, aimed at revitalizing college and university education and bringing it up to speed with a changed world. While I can only applaud his call for reclaiming ?academics as a top priority?, with a clear reference to the seemingly uncontrolled expansion of administrative expenses, which ?have grown faster than instruction on many campuses? [0], the main point of his editorial is an exhortation to college and universities to embrace the use of technology in the classroom, as well as to offer more content online. There is a sense of urgency in Salingo?s recommendations, mostly because, according to him, universities have to ?catch up? quickly, following a decade of inaction (those dreadful nineties).

On these two points, I think that great caution should be exercised, lest we wish to go through decades of ineffective education, followed by decades during which we try and go back to the way things were. Make no mistake, I am not suggesting that the traditional model of education is perfect. It is entirely possible that classroom instruction, with which we have all grown up, that has existed for centuries and has served society well, is inexorably destined to become extinct, swept away by the information revolution that has been taking place before our eyes for the past two decades. It is entirely possible that two decades from now there will be no more classrooms, libraries, campuses, that education will be entirely online, that students everywhere will learn by watching content delivered remotely, or recorded, take tests on the internet and attend virtual graduations.

On the other hand, it is also entirely possible that none of that will happen.
Most of us agree that some, possibly a lot of human activities, will not go virtual any time soon, and may not go virtual ever, typically those based on some minimal level of interaction among individuals. And it is not as if there are no data justifying some skepticism. Online universities have existed for quite some time, and while they certainly have a place in the educational landscape, few people would contend that they represent an equally effective alternative to traditional classroom teaching.
The fact that a lot of reputable ?traditional? universities are offering more and more online courses, is no reason for every university to follow suit. Fads exist, in education like in any other human enterprise.
The experience of online realities (such as Second Life) is quite telling, in this respect. Second Life (SL) is now almost a decade old. It was launched among much hype, as a tool with the potential to open new horizons to education, commerce, research and what have you; multinationals, major high-tech firms such as Microsoft eagerly established a presence therein, for fear of being left behind what was branded as nothing short of a ?revolution? in the way business would be conducted. By now they have practically all pulled out. By all accounts, SL itself is in a state of abandon, after failing to deliver upon its promises; this is a telltale sign of the great challenges that going virtual poses.

While I agree that internet technology has a place in the broader context of college education, I remain convinced that campus-based institutions should make use of it sparingly, mostly as an aid to classroom-based instruction. Instead of trying to compete with them (a race to the bottom that traditional universities simply cannot win), universities should clearly differentiate themselves from for-profit online diploma mills. Great emphasis should be placed on the difference between learning and obtaining a degree, and on the superior educational experience of classroom-based instruction. The day we, academics, no longer believe that sitting in a classroom, listening to a person explain, to the questions from fellow students, is the best way to learn, then we will know that universities as we know them have come to the end of the line. But until then, until hard data convincingly show that students learn more by going online instead of going to school, there is no reason for universities to try to increase online course content beyond what they are all already doing, other than to keep up with a fad.

Some goes for instructional technology. At this point in time, at least in North America the use of computer technology in and out of the classroom, for example, is no novelty anymore. I was an enthusiastic early adopter in 1996, and have made extensive use of it myself since, and while I am the first to admit that it renders some aspects of teaching easier, chiefly the running and administration of large-enrolment courses, its real effectiveness in terms of content delivery and learning should not be exaggerated.
My personal observation is that students do not learn more and/or more quickly just because widgets, movies, animations, online lecture notes and power point presentations are put at their fingertips. None of these things are replacements for attending lectures, reading the textbook, thinking about concepts on one?s own, discussing them with instructors and fellow students, doing the homework. Students who are willing to put the time, do well, those who are not do not ? no technology will change that state of affairs (if that is being ?conservative?, fine, call me one).

Notes

[0] If anything, I wish that Solingo had devoted a much greater share of his editorial to this aspect, seeing by many of us as the most important issue with modern time academia (see here for instance) instead of a single, cautious paragraph, bordering on the perfunctory.

Nokia Store has 120,00 apps, over 120 mllion users, foggy future

As Nokia starts to roll out its latest slice of Symbian-powered hardware across Europe, the manufacturer has bundled up some upbeat usage statistics for its developers. It's a mixture of global clout, big user numbers and several mobile platforms, with Nokia declaring support from 145 operators, across 52 different markets. Its app hub, Nokia Store, is now available in over 190 countries, while there's now over 100,000 "content items" for its simpler Series 40 handsets, with those devices accounting for 42 percent of the last billion items downloaded. The Nokia Store itself has now served over five billion downloads across all of its mobile OS'. There's also some good news for its most recent addition, Windows Phone, which has already caught up with Nokia's own selection with over 100,000 apps to choose from. Over 20,000 Lumia phones have been offered to developers in tandem with Microsoft's Windows Phone seeding program and, according to the beleaguered phone maker, the ecosystem is now "starting to thrive" -- which is good news, considering Symbian's lingering death sentence. Nokia also took the opportunity to highlight its exclusive third-party app offerings from the likes of CNN, ESPN and Sesame Street -- although the jewels of the Lumia series' app provision arguably remain the in-house likes of Nokia Maps and Mix Radio.
