Year of the Green Car: 2012 Autos Set Records for Fleet Average ...

Luke Tonachel, Vehicles Analyst, New York City

2012 is the greenest new automobile fleet ever. Preliminary data for model year 2012, which ended with September, show that new records have been set for fleetwide average fuel economy and the sales of hybrids and plug-in electric vehicles. Dealer showrooms feature an unprecedented choice of fuel-efficient cars and trucks and consumers are buying them. Federal clean car and fuel economy standards are also working as intended to spur automaker investment in fuel-efficiency, which is just what consumers need to protect them from the gas prices pain at the pump.

Fleetwide Fuel Economy Hits a Record High and Saves Consumers Money

According to University of Michigan researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle, model year 2012 reached 23.6 mpg (window label value), which is 1.1 mpg higher than the previous record of 22.5 mpg for model year 2011.

In fact, fuel economy has been on a steady rise over the last five years, largely in response to government action. In 2007, Congress passed and President Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act that required increases in fuel economy through 2030. Regulatory standards first announced in 2009 developed the program?supported by the auto industry, (Read more...)

A Recipe For Disease: Food Deserts and Air Pollution | Care2 ...

On my way to a party recently, I decided at the last minute to pick up a bottle of wine and some fruit to contribute to the festivities. I was already near my destination and began to drive around looking for a grocery store. After circling several blocks with no luck, I engaged my GPS, only to discover that there were no grocery stores for miles in any direction.

I was in a?food desert!

Food Deserts and Food Swamps

And as it turns out, my hometown and state, Houston, Texas are full of them. Recently, I was introduced to the notion of?food deserts and?food swamps, and I realized instantly, the same people who are suffering the ill-effects of air pollution and poor access to health care, are also bearing the brunt of almost no access to quality, nutritious food.?Some of my city?s policy-makers are aware of this and pushing to increase food access.

A?food desert, according to Dr. Ann Barnes, Medical Director for?Weight Management Services and Disease Prevention at Harris County Hospital District, is when one third of the residents in a census tract are over one mile from a full-service supermarket or grocery store.

Food swamps are communities in which there is an overabundance of high caloric, nutrient-poor foods versus healthy foods. In Texas, the uneven distribution of supermarkets statewide has resulted in large areas of residents that go without.?Texas ranks lowest in the nation for supermarket density per population.

The shortage of supermarkets particularly impacts lower-income residents with limited resources for an adequate diet. In Houston, where 21% of the population lives below the poverty line, the poor that are disproportionately affected by the lack of supermarkets live mostly on the eastern parts of the city. It is no coincidence that these areas are the same parts of the city plagued with air pollution and unhealthy conditions.

Obesity, Asthma and Air Pollution

The?Food Trust, a national research and advocacy organization, found that studies overwhelmingly indicate that people living in?food deserts suffer disproportionately high rates of obesity and other diet-related issues. And, even though asthma is not considered a diet-related disease, high incidences of asthma appear in these communities as well. Poor diet contributes to and worsens asthma. There is a direct link between?obesity and the incidence of asthma and asthma-related mortality. According to the?Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine, the rise in obesity rates has paralleled the rise in asthma in recent decades. And conversely, significant weight loss has been associated with improvements in both asthma control and lung function. The higher one?s body mass index, the higher one?s risk of asthma.

Food deserts are almost always?food swamps, meaning that where they are lacking in access to wholesome groceries choices, there is an abundance of unhealthy, fast-food opportunities. Sugar, processed carbohydrates (such as candy, juice, white bread, and chips), and trans fats commonly found in fast foods contribute to the inflammatory response characteristic of triggering asthma. Recently, the?Journal of Asthma published a study of over 2,000 fifth-graders showing that the regular consumption of sweetened beverages greatly increased the children?s risk of developing asthma.

Dirty Air, Asthma and Social Justice

For the children of low-income families,?food deserts,?food swamps and air pollution conspire in their communities with a one-two-three punch that makes kids sicker, poorer-performing academically, and less physically active.?Families under siege from a barrage of factors, when the air is dirty and when there is no access to healthy, wholesome food, cannot fight alone. Those of us concerned about the health of children and the welfare of our communities must band together to insist that policy-makers support strong clean air regulations for all.

Here are some of the ways to help:

Fighting ruptures ragged Syrian ceasefire

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Fighting erupted in a Damascus suburb and around an army base in northern Syria on Friday, opposition sources said, as a truce marking a Muslim holiday crumbled almost before it had begun.

Three people were killed by tank fire and snipers in Harasta, a town near Damascus, activists said.

The Syrian military had said it would hold fire on Friday morning following an appeal by international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi for a pause in fighting which has killed 32,000 people and which threatens to draw regional powers into the conflict.

But violations by both sides swiftly marred the truce.

Rebels in a northern town near the Turkish border said a sniper had killed one of their fighters early on Friday and a Reuters journalist there heard the sound of four tank rounds.

"We don't believe the ceasefire will work," rebel commander Basel Eissa told Reuters. "There's no Eid for us rebels on the front line. The only Eid we can celebrate will be liberation."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels were trying to storm the Wadi al-Daif army base, which is less than 1 km (half a mile) from the Damascus-Aleppo highway, and that troops had fired artillery at a nearby village.

Citing opposition activists, the British-based group also said the army had fired six rockets at the besieged Khalidiya district of Homs, wounding two people and damaging houses.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces had announced conditional acceptance of a cease fire on Thursday night.

"On the occasion of the blessed Eid al-Adha, the general command of the army and armed forces announces a halt to military operations on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic, from Friday morning ... until Monday," the army said.

But it warned it would respond to any rebel attacks, or moves to exploit the truce to reinforce or resupply insurgents.

A commander from the rebel Free Syrian Army had said his fighters would also honor the ceasefire but demanded Assad meet opposition demands for the release of thousands of detainees.

Some Islamist fighters, including the Nusra Front, dismissed the truce before it even came into effect, but after a night of clashes in Aleppo, Damascus and the west of the country, activists had reported an initial lull in hostilities.

One exception was the southern town of Inkhil, where three people were wounded as they tried to protest after special prayers in a mosque to mark the start of the Eid, according to Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory.

Several other demonstrations in the southern province of Deraa, cradle of the protests which erupted against Assad in March last year, were also broken up, Abdulrahman said.

Assad himself, who has vowed to defeat what he says are Islamist fighters backed by Syria's enemies abroad, was shown on state television attending Eid prayers at a Damascus mosque.

DAMASCUS FIGHTING

Damascus residents said on Thursday night troops stationed on a mountain overlooking Damascus targeted Hajar al-Aswad, a poor district inhabited by refugees from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

"Consecutive artillery volleys from Qasioun shook my home," said an engineer who lives in al-Muhajereen district on a foothill of the mountain, giving his name only as Omar.

The fighting pits mainly Sunni Muslim rebels against Assad, from the minority Alawite sect which is distantly related to Shi'ite Islam. Brahimi has warned that the conflict could suck in Sunni and Shi'ite powers across the Middle East.

Qassem Saadeddine, head of the military council in Homs province and spokesman for the FSA joint command, said on Thursday his fighters were committed to the truce, but demanded the release of detainees by Friday morning.

Abu Moaz, spokesman for Ansar al-Islam, which includes several brigades fighting in and around Damascus, said the Islamist group doubted Assad's forces would observe the truce, though it might suspend operations if they did.

"We do not care about this truce. We are cautious. If the tanks are still there and the checkpoints are still there then what is the truce?" he asked.

Brahimi's predecessor, former U.N. chief Kofi Annan, declared a ceasefire in Syria on April 12, but it soon became a dead letter, along with the rest of his six-point peace plan.

Violence has intensified since then, with daily death tolls compiled by opposition monitoring groups often exceeding 200.

U.N. aid agencies have geared up to take advantage of any window of opportunity provided by a ceasefire to go to areas hard to access due to fighting, a U.N. official in Geneva said.

The U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said it had prepared emergency kits for distribution for up to 13,000 families - an estimated 65,000 people - in Homs and the northeastern city of Hassaka.

94% Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

All Critics (53) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (50) | Rotten (3)

For fashionphiles and pop culture vultures, there's much to devour.

Diana Vreeland is both history lesson and sentimental love letter to a fashion titan.

Legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland was the consummate dreamer, a romantic who never looked back and propelled society forward.

A feast for fashion-history buffs and anyone who applauds unstoppable eccentricity.

The late, legendary fashion editor comes alive in "Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel," an awkwardly titled but engaging documentary.

A highly entertaining and colorful portrait of a unique woman.

The filmmakers have done a fine job corralling so many fantastic tales from Vreeland's life.

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" is an intriguing portrait of a true original; you only wish the movie had half the color and verve of its subject.

A lively movie, and in the case of its appearance-obsessed subject, it feels right that all it does is skim the surface.

[Vreeland's] influence on twentieth-century culture was large, and it's celebrated here with affection, dedication and skill--but very little critical detachment.

Though unwilling to dig too deeply into what seems an imperfect private life, it still serves as a splendid introduction to a unique personality.

A poignant portrait of an inveterate iconoclast who couldn't help but push the envelope.

[A] warm portrait of the world's first true fashion maven.

It can be hard to keep up at points -- not with the plot, but with the amount of inspiration that Diana can still strew over an audience.

As a biographical documentary, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel is complete and satisfying. As a leading character, Mrs. Vreeland is entirely entertaining.

Vreeland's attention to detail, her love of new and exciting images, her devotion to and ability to identify, that ethereal thing called style, come across loudly and clearly.

With her lacquered black hair and Kabuki-like face, one-time 'ugly duckling' Vreeland was her own work of art and, as the film reminds us, she was one of the most important and amusing self-made works of art of her century.

Well....hm, alright. Give me enough info and I'll add it to the Veil heading.

Okays~

There two types. The Flicken's and The Beobachter's . Flicken means mend. And Beobachter means watchers. A Flicken is one who tends to the veil. They make sure there are no holes, rips, or tears in it. And if there are any they are to fix it. There are three types a Flickens~

Menders- They are the ones that take care of the easy rips and tears. The ones that can be fixed by simply patching them up.

Shifters- Their the ones that take care of the ones created because one of the side has learned about things on the opposite side. They can change into a form appropriate for what ever side and try and return their mind states into believing certain things aren't real.

Erasers- one hopes to never meet one of them. They fix the hardest to mend holes and rips by completely eliminating the source of the tear or rip. These are rarely used though and have only be used once or twice over the span of all time.

A Beobachter is one that guards the veil. They make sure what is supposed too stays on it side of the Veil. There are only two types of Beobachters~

Flyers- They are the ones that can fly in order to guard the higher parts of the Veil.

Walkers- They can not fly and guard of the lower parts of the Veil.

I would be a mender in this case. This is just the basic info so just ask me any question about them if you have any.

Aww.... I developed an awesome character idea while reading the Introduction, then I saw it was Anime only. :(

I don't have anything against Anime at all, but its just not my thing. Seriously though, great idea for an RP, I hope you all have fun!

Interesting, Blue....BUT! How would they fly? They're human, like you and me. All the laws of nature apply here. Also, the Order of Shadows bans the use of any and all magic, since it would mean that the person in question would be possessed, making them a witch/warlock (I need to add Warlocks). Other than that, very good, I'll add them once I update the Warden area. Unfortunately I won't get to that until tonight, for now, I need sleep.

I'm interested to see where this ends up. I'll keep an eye on it. I'm curious to see what the dragons are like in this RP.

Also, BlueTeddy, let me see if I have it right about what you are suggesting for shifters. The way I understood your words is that they can be either humans of non human that can change form to adapt to the appropriate world. They want to heal the veil to keep the worlds seperate.

Hmmm, this gives me an idea. I read a book recently and in it there were these creatures called Navitars. These creatures were modified to be able to pilot ships down a river of some really complex stuff that I frankly don't fully understand (the river was called the Nigh). What if these Shifters were modified humans/creatures to be a sort of mix of the two whose purpose was to fix the veil?

This is just an idea, I don't know what the plan in this case is for the RP. I could have totally interperted your post incorrectly, too, BlueTeddy. I think this sounds like an interesting idea. Looking forward to seeing this develop more!

No, you didn't miss interpert at all Furry Dragon.

And since they can't fly i'll just get rid of the flyers all together so theres only one kind of Beobachter TwiliXDragon.

Okay, Twil, considering everyone else has basically said "This is a great idea, but I'd like to propose my own suggestion!" I'm rather reluctant to ask, but I have two character ideas I'd love to use and think this place would be a great thread to do so. They sort of conform to your universe's laws, but I'm hesitant to simply apply, so I'll make my request here.

Idea 1: A Human who, after their entire city was massacred by Vampires, vowed revenge, and, taking up twin daggers forged specifically to slay vampires, and bringing with them a small supply of food and water, wandered off on the track of the Vampires, charging after them and into the Veil. During this time, they fight countless battles and kill several Vampires, slowly becoming weaker and weaker and yet refusing to stop, eventually keeping their body from falling apart with sheer determination until they finally hunt down the ones they seek to slay, and, avenging those they care about, finally collapse and die. However, due to their sheer will to live, they find themselves unable to pass on to the afterlife, and so end up as a ghost for a while until they finally master shaping their soul into a perfect replica of their old Human form, also compressing their soul to form replicas of the weapons they used in life. You might be asking why I went to such an extent to do this. The answer is that this would serve as a justification to the abilities "Short range teleportation" - as the character could deconstruct and reconstruct their body at will within a certain range thanks to its spiritual composition - "body enhancement/regeneration" - since they could toughen and amplify their physical abilities by compressing the composition of their soul, and could repair injuries sustained fairly quickly - "flight" - since they could just partially deconstruct their body so as to defy gravity - and "the power to create and manipulate a theoretically unlimited amount of knives" - because they can create said knives with their soul and control them at will, allowing them to effectively spam rains of throwing knives so long as they have the strength to do so. Of course, since they've replicated a Human form perfectly, they'd be susceptible to standard lethal wounds, which would simply destroy their soul and remove them from existence, and more complex injuries would take them some time and concentration to fix, so they're no immortal. Still, I really liked the idea, and thought I'd try to use it here.

Idea 2: A Human whose village was attacked by Demons, which possessed several individuals including her. Unaware of what had happened to her during the first stages of possession, she tried to follow her parents as they fled, only to be turned upon and stabbed by her own father, plunging her into despair which, ironically enough, was enough to break the possession of the Demon - but not to fully expel or subdue it - just in time to be thrown underground and shut up inside a mountain where those possessed by Demons were sealed by the villagers when actual slayers weren't available to kill them. Awakening in her new prison, the character wandered around for several years, forced to live by devouring the other fully Demon-possessed individuals in the Underground, consuming their minds with her newfound Witch abilities, as well as their souls, using the powers of the demon still inside her, and the minds and souls of the Demons that had fully and irrevocably taken them over. Eventually, due to this bizarre, abominable feeding, the minds and souls of the character and the Demon still inside her became one, turning the character into an inhuman mix of Witch and Demon while still somehow preserving her Human heart. By the time she finally fought her way out of the mountain and escaped, the disturbance inside had been noticed, and several slayers had been called to eliminate whatever creature was trying to escape, which could thus kickstart the character's intro arc as she flees from the Stalkers and from Humans in general, trying her best to conceal herself and live a normal life without succumbing to the strange and conflicting natures of Demon and Witch, but perhaps even getting caught up in the affairs of the Stalkers herself and joining them at some point in the hopes of finding a way to seal away her bizarre dual nature for good.

The West valley is home to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Glendale, Goodyear, Laveen, Avondale, Peoria, Surprise, Sun City, Buckeye, Cave Creek and Carefree and Fountain Hills. All the cities have their own unique features and amenities. Age restricted communities are peppered throughout the valley creating a healthy mix and diversity of central Arizona real estate choices.

The major metropolitan area lies in the West valley, whereas the East valley was predominantly farmland converted to homes by urban sprawl over the years. Values in the Greater Phoenix metro area have a long history of rising and falling real estate values. When to buy in Arizona is a personal decision and watching the trends and cycles can give a good indicator of where we are headed. Arizona real estate is very desirable to non-residents as well, with a steady influx of new people moving from colder and less desirable states in terms of weather. Canadian citizens also seem to flock to Central Arizona real estate in search of summer homes and investment properties.

New Apple iPad mini, 4thgeneration iPad reach the FCC

Apple's iPad mini and 4th-generation iPad didn't arrive alone. In the company's time-honored tradition, it has timed the FCC filings for both devices to show up alongside the products themselves. Each iOS tablet has been approved in both singular WiFi and dual cellular editions: the iPad mini has appeared as the WiFi-only A1432 as well as the A1454 and A1455 for worldwide HSPA+, EV-DO and LTE coverage, while the full-size iPad has been cleared in directly paralleled A1458, A1459 and A1460 versions. Not surprisingly, the frequency range matches that of the iPhone 5 and suggests that we're dealing with the same Qualcomm MDM9615 chip. We'll know more once the two iPads are in our hands and those of teardown artists, but for now you can explore Apple's regulatory gymnastics in full at the source links.

eFun's Nextbook Premium 10SE tablet with ICS now available for $280

In a market slightly populated by some great well-priced tablets, and one that eFun is quite familiar with, the company decided now was a good time to add yet another slate into the mix. And while the Premium 10SE is slightly pricier than, say, the entry-level Nexus 7 model, eFun's latest Ice Cream Sandwich slab does sport a larger 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display. Still, the Premium 10SE won't impress many with the rest of its run-of-the-mill internals, which include a 1GHz CPU alongside 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage (expandable via microSD) and a front-facing 0.3-megapixel shooter -- it's also worth mentioning that eFun is kind enough to bundle in 25 eBooks at no extra cost. The Premium 10SE is available now for $280, though you can save a little cash by heading to your local Radio Shack or Hastings shop, where the Nextbook tablet's priced at a more affordable $250.

This Day For GOP: Ryan Hits Back on 'Horses and Bayonttes' Zinger

GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan will join Romney at a rally in Red Rocks, Colo.

Ryan, hitting back against Obama?s ?horses and bayonettes? zinger at Monday night?s presidential debate, on Tuesday implied the president?s quip was na?ve because ?the ocean hasn?t shrunk ? you still have to have enough ships to have the footprint you need ? to keep our strength abroad where it needs to be. ?

Democratic strategist Paul Begala said Democrats have given up on trying to win North Carolina for Obama, and Romney ?is likely to carry? the battleground state.

Reader Rants: You speak up on Anderson Silva, Miesha Tate and more

As usual, Cagereaders are a wonderfully verbose group of people. Here are some of their thoughts on the biggest stories in MMA. Want to make the next Reader Rants? Like Cagewriter on Facebook, then comment on stories.

What's the next move for UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva? There's not many who don't want to see him fight UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones.

Jones of course. That's the only fight that interests me right now. I don't think I'd get another Silva fight. No point, if you know what the outcome will be in advance. -- Randy Huey

Silva has already defeated the greatest wrestlers the UFC has to offer; I like GSP but c'mon. -- Nathan W. Collier

If I really could pick as I've said before Spider would drop down and take GSP's belt (if he could) then go back up and take Jones belt. (If he could.) That would be great. -- Eric Wolfe

Plenty of you spoke up on Miesha Tate's thoughts on men hitting women.

I think it's important to define attack. If someone, man or woman, is about to cause you serious harm then why would you just let them. -- Gabriel Gonzalez

This is the issue with embracing your fighters use of social media. Sometimes, they'll say something you'd really wish they hadn't. -- Rob Stevens

Forrest Griffin will now fight Phil Davis, and you spoke up on how you think that fight will go at UFC 155.

Davis looked awesome in his last fight against Prado. I think he is going to totally dominate Forrest. Forrest is one of my favs, but Davis has way better wrestling skills and should be able to take Forest down at will and dominate on the ground. I say, Anaconda Choke, 3rd round. -- Josh Baer

Davis may literally murder him. Knocked on your [expletive] twice against Tito. Pfeh. -- Andrew Salvage

Why winning?or losing?a nail-biter would be historic for Obama

As the last debate approaches, the specter that haunted me a while back still hovers over this campaign: the possibility that we may be faced on Election Night with two, three, many Floridas. I now imagine both parties deploying AWACS filled with lawyers and organizers, circling the country, parachuting forces into New Hampshire, Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa and Colorado as state after state deadlocks on Election Night.

Whether or not this nightmare comes true?and I devoutly hope it does not?this campaign has already earned its place in the annals of the unusual. An incumbent president facing a very close election is overwhelmingly the exception, rather than the rule.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, only three incumbents have won close elections.

Woodrow Wilson in 1916 won a 3-percentage-point popular vote margin, but it was California?s 13 electoral votes that gave him the White House?votes he won with a 3,700-vote plurality.

Harry Truman?s 1948 upset was won with about a 4.5-point popular vote plurality, but it was his remarkably close victories in Ohio, Illinois and California?each won by well under 1 percent of the vote?that put him back in the White House.

George W. Bush won in 2004 by about 2.5 points, and a similar margin in Ohio gave him his second term. A 60,000 vote switch there would have produced the second straight election where the national popular vote winner was denied the presidency.

If the Romney campaign takes heart from the infrequency of a close incumbent victory, it should consider the other side of the coin. Only one incumbent has lost a close contest: Gerald Ford in 1976, who lost nationally by 2 points, but who would have won with a shift of some 14,000 votes in Ohio and Mississippi.

These elections are clear departures from the norm, where an incumbent wins either comfortably or overwhelmingly (Theodore Roosevelt, FDR, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton) or loses in similar fashion (Taft, Hoover, Carter, George H.W. Bush).

There is, of course, the possibility that the ground will shift in the last two weeks. A decisive debate performance, a late revelation, a sudden, seismic event at home or abroad could turn this cliffhanger into a rout.

As of now, though, 2012 looks as if it?s about to join that foursome of elections, one that will require gallons of caffeine on Election Night and the next morning before we learn whether the moving vans will be called to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

'Fifa 13? review: The definitive soccer video game experience ...

NBA2K13 may be the best sports game in the U.S., but?EA Canada?s?Fifa 13 is the most popular sports video game in the world.

It has the record-breaking?sales numbers to prove it and after playing it, I understand why.

Presentation / Graphics

Like previous installments of the famous soccer franchise, Fifa13?s presentation wants to give gamers the definitive soccer experience.? It may be overwhelming at first, but Fifa 13 has crammed this version with 30 of the world?s best leagues, so finding your favorite team won?t be a problem. Soccer fans can jump right in and create their dream matches right out of the gate. You can choose from a country?s national club like Spain or the minor teams that reside there as well. Once you drop your team into the pitch, be sure to take in the visual scenery because each stadium (there?s 69 total) ?is unique. The passion that separates soccer fans from other sports fanatics are reflected digitally as well. Hometown cheers (and jeers) can be heard and seen during each break in the action, giving gamers the perspective of what a footballer feels like on the field.

Gameplay

The control functionality for any sports title is the most important component for constructing a sold gaming experience. EA kept the control scheme relatively untouched from previous installments, and this is a good thing. The ?inclusion of ?first touch? controls, however, may take beginners longer to get the hang of them. ?First touch? controls emphasize the interactions between the ball and ball carrier like never before as the art of passing is critical to your success. Even more so than scoring, because the momentum behind each pass reduces the risk of a wild kick to the goal.? Your right stick is used to juke as you shake off your defenders that must be accordingly depending on who you control. A shifty striker like Cristian Ronaldo will have a more expanded foot-skill as he moves the ball up field, while scorers like Wayne Rooney have a variety of trick shots unique to him. Every team and every player is distinctive.

Verdict

The problem with most annual titles is finding balance between building on the success of past versions while making enough improvements to stand out. Fifa 13 walks this tightrope well. For both the avid and casual soccer fan, Fifa 13 is a great vessel for the world?s game. Aside from the ?first touch? control scheme, this is the definitive soccer experience of 2012.

High schools with athletic trainers have more diagnosed concussions, fewer overall injuries

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? High schools with athletic trainers have lower overall injury rates, according to a new study, "A Comparative Analysis of Injury Rates and Patterns Among Girls' Soccer and Basketball Players," presented Oct. 22 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans. In addition, athletes at schools with athletic trainers are more likely to be diagnosed with a concussion.

Researchers reviewed national sports injury data on girls' high school soccer and basketball programs with athletic trainers, between the fall of 2006 and the spring of 2009, from the Reporting Information Online (RIO?) and compared it to local Sports Injury Surveillance System (SISS) data on a sample of Chicago public high school programs without athletic trainers for the same sports and time period.

Overall injury rates were 1.73 times higher among soccer players and 1.22 times higher among basketball players in schools without athletic trainers. Recurrent injury rates were 5.7 times higher in soccer and 2.97 times higher in basketball in schools without athletic trainers. In contrast, concussion injury rates were 8.05 times higher in soccer and 4.5 times higher in basketball in schools with athletic trainers.

While less than 50 percent of U.S. high schools have athletic trainers, "this data shows the valuable role that they can play in preventing, diagnosing and managing concussions and other injuries," said Cynthia LaBella, MD, FAAP. "Athletic trainers have a skill set that is very valuable, especially now when there is such a focus on concussions and related treatment and care. Concussed athletes are more likely to be identified in schools with athletic trainers and thus more likely to receive proper treatment.

"Athletic trainers facilitate treatment of injuries and monitor recovery so that athletes are not returned to play prematurely. This likely explains the lower rates of recurrent injuries in schools with athletic trainers," said Dr. LaBella.

Obama immigration stance locks in Hispanic support

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Elizabeth Alvisar is exactly the sort of voter Mitt Romney needs.

A victim of the brutal economy in this swing state, the 30-year-old tax preparer has been out of work for months. She's a foe of abortion and gay marriage, and was naturally drawn to the Republican ticket.

But Alvisar has switched her support to President Barack Obama now.

"It's just because of the Dream Act," she said, referring to the president's August executive order that allows people brought into the country illegally as children to avoid deportation if they graduate high school or join the military. "I have a lot of friends who've taken advantage of that opportunity."

In the heavily Hispanic neighborhood where Alvisar lives, unemployment is high and home values are down. But Obama's immigration stance, and especially his executive order, has locked in support from a fast-growing demographic group that has been trending sharply Democratic in the wake of increasingly hard-line Republican positions on immigration.

Obama's campaign is counting on Hispanics providing the margin of victory not just in Nevada, but also in other swing states such as Colorado, Iowa, Virginia and North Carolina

"They know that he's on the right side of the immigration issue and wants to work with Congress for comprehensive immigration reform," deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said. "They know he wakes up every day and thinks about how to secure the middle class and make it easier for young people to enter the middle class."

The importance of Hispanics as a voting bloc and immigration as an election-year issue was brought home during last week's presidential debate. Obama reminded viewers that Romney, who went hard to the right on the issue during the GOP primaries, had argued for "self-deportation" to solve the illegal immigration problem and took advice on the issue from the law professor who helped write Arizona's controversial immigration statute. The Republican challenger noted that Obama had promised to pass an immigration overhaul and had failed.

The Romney campaign says Hispanics, enduring a 9.9 percent jobless rate, which is more than 2 points higher than the national average, are a natural draw for the GOP ticket. "Hispanics are hurting almost more than any other demographic group under the Obama economy," Romney's Spanish-speaking son Craig, a frequent surrogate in the Hispanic community, said in a brief interview. "They're really struggling and they understand that this president has failed them and we need someone who understands how to create jobs."

The Romney campaign opened an office here in September and last week hosted New Mexico's popular Hispanic governor, Susannah Martinez, in an effort to cut into Obama's edge in East Las Vegas, home to 42 percent of Nevada's Hispanic population.

But even some Romney supporters are pessimistic that Republicans can make inroads with a population that, many polls show, favors Obama by a 2-to-1 margin.

"It's going to take several years because we haven't engaged this community at all," said Joel Garcia, a conservative who formed a coalition to recruit Hispanics here. "You've got a lot of Hispanics who are conservative in how they live their lives and their values, but there's this hook in their mouth pulling them left called immigration."

Much like any other group, Hispanics often list the economy, jobs and education as top issues in polls. But the acrimonious immigration debate of the past decade has given that issue extra weight for them. "What started as a war on illegal immigration is now being perceived as a war on Latinos," said Matt Barreto, who polls Hispanics for the company Latino Decisions.

Nevada is a prime example of that dynamic. In 2010, Hispanics helped Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid win re-election against a tea party candidate who promoted her staunch anti-illegal immigration stance. Republican Brian Sandoval, a Hispanic who was elected governor at the same time, only won 33 percent of the Hispanic vote.

Until Obama's executive order, Hispanic activists were frustrated that he Obama had not pursued plans to legalize more illegal immigrants. Instead, his administration was deporting them in record numbers.

"Before President Obama made his decision to go forward with deferred action, it was pretty dismal," said Vicenta Montoya, an immigration attorney and Democratic activist. "I was going to vote for Obama but it wasn't going to be with grand enthusiasm."

Now Obama's order has fired up Montoya and others in East Las Vegas, a swath of shopping centers, tire shops and weathered ranch houses sprawling east from the Strip. It's the neighborhood of the often-unionized people who make Sin City function ? housekeepers, card dealers and taxi drivers.

For some, Obama's order pulled them into politics. Earlier this month, Hector Rivera's father asked him what he was going to do with his future. Rivera, a high school senior who was brought to the United States illegally when he was 5, went to the East Las Vegas Obama campaign office and volunteered.

The teenager already has applied for documents allowing him to work under Obama's program. "It's an opportunity for me and future generations," said Rivera, 17, imagining how his own unborn children could benefit someday. "Even though they'll be born here, I want to get a better job to give them a better opportunity so they can live a better life."

Others, like Sergio Solis, have suffered economically but see the president as on their side. Solis had to close a restaurant in Southern California and move here to work as a salesman for an energy company. But, after approvingly mentioning the Dream Act, Solis said it will take time to correct the country's course following the eight years of the George W. Bush administration.

"This building here, I can dynamite it and destroy it in five minutes," Solis said, gesturing to a supermarket where he was handing out brochures. "But I can't build it back up in five minutes."

The Romney campaign's East Las Vegas office shares a strip mall with a bail bond company and a tortilleria. It opened after volunteers in the neighborhood urged the campaign to set up shop closer to their homes, so they didn't have to drive to the suburbs to phone-bank or collect yard signs.

Susana Loli, 56, is thrilled. The hotel housekeeper didn't vote for Obama in 2008. But as the economy collapsed before his inauguration, she hoped he could keep the country healthy. Now her side business fixing garage doors has shriveled, and she had to sell family property in Peru to stave off foreclosure on her Nevada house.

"With Mitt Romney, we'll have a better future for my children and grandchildren," Loli said. "The Latinos who are going to vote for Obama haven't studied the problem. When you talk to them and explain the situation, then they understand."

Ana Maria Gonzalez, 50, was disappointed that some Hispanics support Obama because of his executive order. She backs Romney because of her faith in his business acumen and moral values, but also because she thinks he's more likely to deliver a humane overhaul of the country's immigration system.

"In four years, President Obama did nothing," Gonzalez said, adding, that she was certain Romney would come up with a way to let Dream Act youth and other deserving illegal immigrants stay in the country.

Playboy's Miss October talks about gamer stereotypes and breaking ...

Pamela Horton, who is Miss October in Playboy magazine, stands out among the magazine?s models because she?s one of the first to confess to being a hardcore gamer. She?s a die-hard World of Warcraft fan, plays a lot of League of Legends, and recently put 38 hours into beating Final Fantasy XIII-2. She got a ?realm first herbalist? ranking and is playing the Mists of Pandaria expansion for Wow. While she could get plenty of gigs being a model for game characters, or as a ?booth babe? at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) trade show,?her real ambition is to design game characters.

The Wichita, Kansas resident may get noticed wherever she goes. But even with all the advantages that come with being Miss October, she realizes she might very well run into some barriers and that stereotypes could both help her and hurt her.

GamesBeat: Has there been a Playmate before who?s as big a gamer as you?

Horton: [Miss June 2012] Amelia Talon is actually another gamer. She just chose not pursue that kind of route. ? I don?t know if she?s a bigger gamer, though.

GamesBeat: It seems like it?s still unusual for people to believe that pretty girls can be gamers ?

Horton: Yeah. There?s still a lot of stereotyping going around. It?s hard to beat that.

GamesBeat: In some ways you?re breaking a stereotype. You must feel good about that.

Horton: I?m just trying to set the standard a little bit higher for women trying to be taken seriously as gamers. It?s a push and shove kind of thing. Sometimes I have a hard time, sometimes it?s easier. It?s touch and go.

GamesBeat: When you?re known as every gamer guy?s dream, then you?re almost sort of fulfilling a stereotype at the same time that you?re breaking one.

Horton: Um ? kinda? I get a lot of grief for that quote. People tell me that it?s very arrogant. But that quote was taken to imply that I was single. ? The actual quote is, ?I enjoy being my gamer guy?s dream.? But you know, it has to be implied that I?m single [laughs]. And in the process, they made me seem really arrogant. I have a little something to live down there.

GamesBeat: You?ve had to deal with this a long time, way before you were famous. How would you say that you?ve seen that develop or change over time? The whole gamer stereotype thing.

Horton: Ever since online play has come into its own. Very recently, with a lot more competitions and tournaments and things like that, online play has become a big thing, and with online play there?s a lot of anonymity and ways to quote conversation. People hide behind that anonymity. In some ways it?s gotten better, but in some ways it?s gotten worse.

GamesBeat: Yeah. I don?t know if you play on Xbox Live a lot, but the chatter during matches and the lobby time is just so severe when it comes to anything to do with sex or race or ?

Horton: Yeah. It?s pretty bad in first-person shooters.

GamesBeat: So what do you like to play right now?

Horton: Right now specifically, I do play World of Warcraft, Mists of Pandaria. League of Legends. I recently got into Theatrythm Final Fantasy. I just picked up Pokemon White 2. I?m really big into the RPGs.

GamesBeat: Tell me more about that. How much are you playing, and what are you achieving in some of those games?

Horton: I don?t have a lot of time to just constantly play. I only get a few moments here and there lately. Achievements aren?t that big for me anymore lately. But I did beat Final Fantasy XIII-2 recently. That?s the only real game that I have under my belt through the last two months or so. I haven?t had time to commit to a game and beat it. I?d say I put in ? 38 hours?

GamesBeat: Wow. That?s pretty crazy. How about World of Warcraft? I guess you?d be level 90 or so?

Horton: Actually, in the new expansion, I have almost all my characters at level 85. Sometimes I?ll be like, ?Okay, I?ll play the paladin today.? Other times I?ll say, ?Oh, I?ll play the priest.? So most of my characters are still under 90.

GamesBeat: You?ve got this great career in modeling. Are you still interested in something on the game side, in game development?

Horton: Actually, what I?m trying to do is on the game side. I?m trying to pursue a career in gaming, and modeling just happens to be my current job. It?s my gateway into gaming.

GamesBeat: Tell me what that?s like. It probably isn?t easy to break into the games industry as a woman as well, right?

Horton: People are very skeptical. Like I said before, there?s a lot of stereotyping. They have a really hard time grasping how serious of a gamer I am. I get questioned a lot. I get pestered a lot. People test me a little bit more than they would a guy, or even a girl who isn?t gaining notoriety from being a model. I?m getting the brunt of the skepticism. So?

GamesBeat: Are you up for the challenge? Do you enjoy it?

Horton: Yeah! I?m still pushing through. I feel like I?m proving myself.

GamesBeat: Have you been to an E3? Do you go to some industry conventions?

Horton: Up until recently, I was never really in a financial situation where I could go to conventions, although I wanted to forever. I wanted to be the one who goes to E3 and says, ?Oh my gosh, I got to play this demo!? and all my friends are jealous and excited. I wanted to live that aspect of my social circle, because all my friends get to do it.

GamesBeat: It sounds like you want to be a game developer, though.

Horton: Well, not a game developer exactly. I want to be a character designer. I?ve always been an artistic person, and to use my art in a creative way through gaming is a huge dream. If I can have it come true? I mean, who am I to not try to pursue that?

GamesBeat: You have your own art storefront on Etsy, I noticed.

Horton: Yeah. Right now it?s only got my two t-shirts, but once things die down and I?m not as busy, I can get back to bringing out my art commissions, my little hand trinkets, keychains, jewelry, stuff like that.

GamesBeat: What kind of characters would you design?

Horton: I like more fantastical characters. I can do realistic, I can do science fiction, things of that nature, but? Like, for instance, in League of Legends, being able to design a woman who uses, say, purple fire? Just being able to not have so many limits on what you?re able to do. I mean, if you want a girl who uses a pillow as her main weapon, that?s not especially frowned on there.

GamesBeat: Female characters in games ? they tend to be very stereotyped, again.

Horton: Yeah. Very proportionate. Giant breasts. Long, nice legs. Tiny waists. Yeah. It?s a little unfair. As a girl, I can appreciate the femininity portrayed in a lot of the characters, though, and I love it. You have to take it a little bit at a time. As frustrating as it is, I still enjoy it.

GamesBeat: Have you had any experience so far, any chances to break in?

Horton: I?m still trying really hard. I?m not the best or anything, but I?m trying really hard to get in. You never know what kind of thing can get your foot in the door. I don?t need to be a big name, you know? I?m okay working an average, day-to-day job being a normal person.

GamesBeat: Have you ever done cosplay?

Horton: Yeah. I actually went as Ayla from Chrono Trigger to an anime convention a couple of years ago. That?s the only one I?ve done, though.

GamesBeat: If you had a chance to be a character in a game, what do you think that would be?

Horton: I love being empathetic or really feeling for characters in RPGs. I?m a big RPG fan. Finding that female character that I can relate to is always really nice.

GamesBeat: There?s been some controversy lately about the ?girlfriend mode? that?s been designed into some games, the fact that they refer to the easier mode as a ?girlfriend mode.? Is that one more thing that we have to get past?

Horton: Personally I play on normal and hard. I?ve never really heard about that and had it be an issue for me. So I guess that says plenty about how it?s affected me.

GamesBeat: Online, would you say that you usually pick a female character when you play? Does that tend to draw your attention?

Horton: Not really. Guys pick female characters all the time. I?m not the only one. I?d say it was just about the same.

GamesBeat: When you?re interacting like that with people online, how much fun is that compared to, say, real life? Are you making more of your friends online than you do offline?

Horton: My most recent friends have been online, actually. I?ve gotten to know people in California, in Utah, in Florida. I?ve been getting to know people really well through online gaming. So I?d say yeah, that?s a real thing for me.

GamesBeat: When you?re beating guys online and they find out you?re a woman, do you get some satisfaction out of that?

Horton: Yeah, I get a lot of satisfaction out of kind of representing the gender, but there?s still a little bit of ? not resentment, but there?s just that stereotyping. Not all women are one way or another. Guys probably don?t like being stereotyped either, so it?s the same situation.

GamesBeat: Do you have any job offers yet from the games business?

Horton: Even if I did, I couldn?t clarify that one. [laughs]
