RPG Grinsia (for Android)

Like?Symphony of Eternity($2.99, 4 stars) and RPG Aeon Avenger ($3.99, 3.5 stars), RPG Grinsia ($7.99 on Google Play) is a traditional, top-down Japanese RPG for most Android phones and tablets with a fantasy setting, cute little cartoon characters, and turn-based combat. Unlike in some of its competition, Grinsia starts you out with a pre-formed party: a family of "treasure hunters" who quickly get drawn into a plan to protect some ancient artifacts from a predatory empire. Translation and character development are actually pretty good here, and you can answer simple yes/no questions in the dialog interface. There's even a bit of comedy.

Grinsia takes place in three scales: a zoomed-in town mode, a zoomed-out walkable world map, and a turn-based battle interface. Battles are more tedious than in the other Kemco games I've played, because fighting always seems to require one too many taps, there's a tedious little XP-acquisition sequence at the end of every battle, and there's very little user choice in terms of acquiring skills and abilities. In a game where you're constantly running into invisible random monster encounters, that's an issue.

Grinsia's other challenge is that it seems to be easy to get stuck; I had trouble about five hours in with a cave where the game's UI elements seemed to be blocking the way out, for instance, and I've seen other complaints online about different locations. There have been a few minor version updates since I played through, though, so those sticky points may have been cleared up by now.

Grinsia isn't a must-buy like Kemco's classic Symphony of Eternity. There just isn't as much fun character-building involved, and the battles don't go as smoothly. But, for eight dollars with no additional purchases necessary, it's a decent plot-driven RPG.

Accent Furniture For the Bedroom | DirectBuy Home Improvement Blog

Bedroom FurnitureThere are various ways to incorporate accent furniture in the bedroom so that it can serve as a decorative part of the decor as well as a functional part of the room design.? These enhance your traditional bedroom furniture pieces while adding more style to the space.

Choosing seating for the bedroom

It?s very convenient to have some type of chair included in your bedroom design. If space allows, one or two comfortable accent chairs would be ideal in the bedroom. There are some wonderfully unique accent chairs that would enhance any bedroom decor. However, if space is limited, a bench seat with storage or a decorative trunk with a sturdy top placed at the foot of the bed might be the best or only option.

Accent Tables For The Bedroom

An accent table placed beside of a chair creates an ideal reading area in the bedroom. Splurging on a unique, artistically decorative accent table to fill an empty space in the bedroom will make the room more attractive. Corner tables and vanity tables are always attractive in a bedroom.

With a little creativity you can add accent furniture such as a coat rack, magazine table or bookcase to your bedroom design. Accent pieces are beneficial in completing the overall design of a room.

DirectBuy has beautiful accent furniture for every room of your home as well as the bedroom.? Get information on how you can find furniture and accent pieces for your home at confidential dealer pricing.

Introducing: Kate Yandell

This is a series of Q&As with young and up-and-coming science, health and environmental writers and reporters. They ? at least some of them ? have recently hatched in the Incubators (science writing programs at schools of journalism), have even more recently fledged (graduated), and are now making their mark as wonderful new voices explaining science to the public.

Today we introduce you to Kate Yandell (Scienceline blog, Twitter).

Hello, welcome to The SA Incubator. Let?s start from the beginning: where are you originally from?

I?m from Pasadena, California (part of the Los Angeles area) and lived there all my life until I went to college in a very different place: Williamstown, Massachusetts. Williamstown has a population of around 8,000 and is in the northern Berkshires. In California, I spent a lot of time going to movies, running in canyons and exploring the city?s public transit. In Williamstown, activities included snowshoe racing, learning to make cheese and occasionally daydreaming about hopping freight trains to go on adventures outside the town?s limits. One thing the places share: beautiful mountains.

How did you get into science and how did you get into writing? And how did these two trajectories fuse into becoming a science writer?

My line for the last year has been that I first decided to be a science writer after graduating from college with degrees in biology and English. I recently discovered proof to the contrary. In an old journal from freshman year of college, under the heading ?Possible Future Ambitions,? I apparently wrote, ?Science writing would be really fun.?

Around that time, I was starting to realize that biology was more than cut-and-dried facts, and that people around the country were experimenting and floundering about trying to figure it out. Writing and reading have always been most important to me, but I found myself taking biology class after biology class. In retrospect, I figured out pretty early on that what I loved most was stories, but it took me a little longer to figure out the kinds of stories I wanted to tell.

How do you find suitable stories to write about? What are your criteria?

I?ve gotten a few story ideas from current press releases, journal articles and events, but I?ve also found stories just by thinking of an interesting question and trying to answer it or by trying to researching one story idea and coming up with another. Good signs along the way: 1) When my questions get a rise out of my sources. 2) When I find myself enthusiastically relaying facts from my story to people I barely know.

Why did you decide to attend a specialized science/health/environmental writing program instead of a generalized journalism or writing program, or just starting a blog and hoping to break into the science writing business?

If I had been able to fool anyone (including myself) into thinking I actually wanted to be a biologist, I may have enjoyed working in a lab and doing some science writing on the side following graduation. Unfortunately, I became aware of my non-scientific ambitions a little too early. The thing to do seemed to be to pursue science journalism wholeheartedly, and school was a first step. I chose a science journalism program as opposed to a general journalism program because I thought I?d meet people with interests closer to my own and get some specific insights into the market for what I wanted to do.

Which science writing program did you attend? Why did you choose that one? What are your best experiences there?

I am still in the midst of the Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP) at New York University. I chose SHERP because it was in New York City and because of program head Dan Fagin?s insidious methods of luring people in. He encouraged me to go to SHERP classes for three days, and I met amazing guest speakers, sat through an editorial crisis related to our online news site Scienceline and ate Jamaican food. By the end of that, I was already a SHERPie.

What professional experience you have had so far ??publications, internships, jobs? Feel free to include a bunch of links here! What is your current job?

I?m interning this summer for the New York Times science desk. I get to write and do multimedia projects on health and the environment. The most fun piece I?ve done so far was a video for the Green Blog on the opening of the Wild Bird Fund, a wildlife rehabilitation center on the Upper West Side. My fellow intern and I spent three hours interviewing people and hanging out while blue jays and grackles landed on our heads and an endless stream of baby pigeons came through the door.

Apart from writing, do you also do other aspects of science communication, e.g., podcasts, video, art/illustration, photography, infographics, or do you do any coding, web design and programming?

I never expected I would like making videos, but I?ve done two of them in the last month and loved it. I?ve contributed to WNYU?s science radio show, The Doppler Effect. And finally, my whole class is taking a class this summer on making infographics.

How do you see the current and future science media ecosystem, how it differs from the past, and what role will new, young science communicators like yourself play in building it and making it the best it can be?

I find it exciting and terrifying that the job I?m pursuing is so different than it was 20 years ago when people first started asking what I wanted to be when I grew up. I see people making such fun and creative things, like animations about beer, mesmerizing maps and (in Amy Harmon?s case) epic articles about autism featuring images and sounds that pop out of words. I also am a fan of journalism being a job that people can get paid for, and I want that to continue to be the case. I think it?s our job to be relentlessly optimistic and open-minded about how to do journalism.

Thank you!

Thank you, Bora!

Google Earth 7.0 for Android brings new, super-detailed 3D maps for some cities (update: video)

Google Earth for Android gets new 3D maps for some cities

Here's a bit of a surprise that slipped under the radar during the Google I/O keynote: Google Earth for Android has been updated to 7.0 to take advantage of the new 3D map technology it unveiled at another special event just a few weeks ago. As a refresher, the visuals are automatically created from 45-degree aerial imagery and can pick up 3D elements as subtle as trees. Before you go racing to your hometown to see how it looks in 3D, be aware that just a handful of cities and regions exploit that dimension. Besides San Francisco Bay, the full coverage extends to Boulder, Boston, Charlotte, Lawrence, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, Santa Cruz and Tampa in the US, with Rome being the lone international hotspot. If that's too few places to visit, there's always the addition of guided tours. Android users can head over Google Play to get the update today; iOS users shouldn't fret, as they'll get the new maps soon.

Update: Google now has video, if you'd rather not (or can't) install the app to try it yourself.

What Is A Domain Name? | www ... - Online Success Path

Word Wide WebMost of you probably already know what a domain name is, but I don?t want to make assumptions as to what everyone knows at this point, so I?m going to assume that we will have some complete beginners here.? And that?s quite all right to be a beginner.? Everyone must start at the beginning.

I?ll share with you information about a domain name ? what it is, how to choose a domain name, and where to get one.? A domain is one of the required elements of a website.

A domain name is the address of a website ? such as yoursite.com ? it?s like a house address and represents the address of your home on the World Wide Web.? Your domain name is the way in which people can find your website.? For example, the domain of the site you are on right now is onlinesuccesspath.com.

The Internet will automatically assume it needs to add http:// in front of a domain name that you type into a browser.? So when you type in www. followed by a domain name, you may notice that your web browser displays it as http://www.yoursite.com.? You don?t have to literally type in the http://, as the browser will insert that by default.

Either way, whether you see this automatically included in your web browser or not, whatever browser you are using (such as Firefox or Internet Explorer) will assume the protocol is http:// followed by the www address you have typed in.? You simply type in www. followed by the site name you want to view.

Http stands for Hypter Text Transfer Protocol, and it is the way in which browsers and web servers exchange data, allowing you to surf the web and find what you are looking for.

web home page nameYour domain represents the ?home? page of your website, but as you add new pages to your site, the URL structure will change to reflect where to find a particular page on your site within the internet.? For example, a URL could look like this:? www.yoursite.com/articles/gardening.html.

URL stands for ?Uniform Resource Locator.? In the example above, we see the home page of the website as www.yoursitename.com.??The domain is yoursitename.com.? We also see a folder called ?articles? which is being used to house articles for that site.? We see a gardening article from the ?articles? folder called gardening.html.

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language.? This is simply computer code.? It?s the language used to write content on the Web.? But not to worry ? as we get into web editors, you?ll see how your editor will take care of the special coding for you.? So there won?t be a lot that you?ll have to know about this computer language when you get ready to build your website pages.

A URL consists of various sections (including the domain name) that, when combined, will point to a specific page of a website. Obviously, there will be more than just a home page with the domain name for a website ? unless one is simply using a one-page website, also referred to as a squeeze page.

A website can consist of as many pages as your hosting account will support in terms of the web space that your combined pages utilize.? In today?s times, even a small hosting package will almost always support as many pages as you need.

dot com extensionWhen choosing a domain name, you?ll also pick an extension to go with that name ? such as .com (the most popular extension).?

Here are just a few types of domain name extensions ? but keep in mind that for business purposes, you can?t go wrong with a .com extension.? The reason is that it?s the first extension that comes to mind when people type in a domain in their web browser.

.com ? Stands for ?commercial? and is the most widely used extension.? Businesses generally prefer a .com domain because it?s the most highly recognized symbol for an online presence.

.net ? Stands for ?network? and is commonly used by Internet service providers, web hosting companies, or other businesses that are involved in the infrastructure of the Internet.? Some businesses may choose this extension for intranet websites.

.org ? Stands for ?organization? and is primary used by non-profit organizations.

.biz ? Stands for ?business? and is used for small business sites in some cases (However, the .com choice is still the preferred option for a business, regardless of the size of that business.)

.info ? Stands for ?information? and is used for credible resources on the web which provide information.

.tv ? Stands for ?television? and is used in the entertainment or media industries.

.edu ? Stands for ?education? and is limited to educational institutions such as colleges and universities or other accredited schools.

.gov ? Stands for ?government? and is limited to government agencies in the U.S.

You can explore other domain extensions at Wikipedia.

In the next post, I?ll cover tips for choosing a domain name . . . followed by how to purchase your domain.

Kristin McCracken: Zero Shades of Grey: The Invisible War Sheds Light on the Military's Ugliest Secret

Kirby Dick?s important new documentary unravels the truth about the prevalence of sexual assault in today?s U.S. military ? and the institutional cover-ups that further denigrate the victims. The movie is hard to watch, but the realities are even harder to ignore.

The Invisible War

Courtesy of Cinedigm/Docurama Films

In civilian life, it?s hard enough for rape victims to get the justice they deserve. Our legal system?s foundation of ?innocent until proven guilty? leads to he said/she said situations where proof is not always readily available. Still, the investigations are run by a third-party justice system without an automatic investment in either side of any given case.

In the U.S. military ? where women have served alongside men for over 70 years, though the numbers still skew heavily male ? such unbiased investigations do not exist. Quite often, women (and men, though the majority of victims are women) who are assaulted must report their attacks to commanding officers who have a close relationship with the perpetrator ? or, in some cases, are the perpetrator. Clearly, this is a direct conflict of interest of the highest order. As a result, only a small fraction of cases are ever prosecuted to the fullest extent. In the worst cases, the tables are turned on the victim in the most egregious ways: they are accused of ? and punished for ? lying, adultery, etc.?

Courtesy of Cinedigm/Docurama Films

The Invisible War (directed by Kirby Dick, Outrage, TFF 2009) uncovers the ugly truth about women ? and men ? who are twice-victimized by the military in which they proudly served: first, by their attackers, and second, by an ingrained set of institutional policies that treat their attacks as pesky flies that need to be swatted. In interview after heart-wrenching interview, the victims? stories paint a picture of a system that is severely broken, a pattern that exists in all four branches of service.

Acute pain ? both physical and emotional ? is evident on a diverse parade of faces, as the survivors (and their loved ones, who are also deeply affected) take us from their initial elation and pride in serving their country through the various betrayals that are layered, deep, and lasting. Most even admit they have contemplated suicide, which reminds the viewer of the recent statistic that more soldiers have killed themselves this year than have died in combat. (It should be noted that most of the assaults recounted in the film did not happen during deployment overseas; they happened right here at home, on bases as prestigious as the Marine Barracks Washington.)

At a preview screening last Thursday, director Kirby Dick and producer Amy Ziering talked about the five years of interviews, investigations and deep-dive research ? including numerous Freedom of Information Act requests ? that led to the release of the film. They have taken a two-pronged approach to marketing the film ? grassroots and ?grass-tops,? with the latter an attempt to show the film to those who decide policy in the government ? illustrating their hope that The Invisible War can have a real impact on effecting concrete change. Indeed, a heartening coda to the film explains how, two days after Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta viewed the film in April, he immediately made a policy change, whereby commanders are no longer the sole decision-maker as to whether rape charges go forward or not. And just last week, after Dick and Ziering appeared on MSNBC?s Morning Joe, Vice President Joe Biden reached out to the filmmakers requesting a copy of the film.

Courtesy of Cinedigm/Docurama Films

There is much debate and rhetoric ? on both sides of the aisle ? about the levels of support we as a country show the soldiers and veterans who serve and protect us daily. While there is no guarantee that they will be safe from harm in combat situations, what should never be in question is their day-to-day safety among their colleagues.

How can you help?

? See the film. The Invisible War opened on Friday in select cities (NYC, San Francisco, Santa Monica, and Washington). In the coming weeks, look for it in cities across the country.

? If the film is not showing in your city, request a screening or host one of your own.

? Make your voice heard. The filmmakers have set up a #notinvisible campaign across the Web and social media. To find out more, visit notinvisible.org.

Uninspired | ?Until Eating Disorders Are No More

Hi, internet. Sorry I?ve been absent lately. I?m taking a summer class (for the first time in four years!) and, in addition to my regular job, it?s a lot of work. I?ll try to get posting again on a somewhat regular basis!

Currently listening: Have Heart -?Songs to Scream at the Sun
Currently reading:?Women and Politics

There?s something that has been bothering me lately. Around the time that Tumblr announced they would be actively screening and banning accounts & posts which promoted self-harm and eating disorders, I noticed a new trend.

Fitness Inspiration. Or, ?fitspo? for short. A little background: the type of stuff Tumblr was taking aim at (although how effectively they?ve implemented this policy is arguable) was content that actively promotes or encourages eating disordered behavior. Images of emaciated people, usually women, emphasizing characteristics of being extremely underweight that are circulated by ?support? communities for eating disorders, but all they support is the continuation and reinforcement of life-threatening disorders.

The average person sees this crap and they are appropriately upset by it. However, it was quickly replaced by ?fitspo?. This, it seems, is perfectly okay with the average person. Images of female athletes doing physically demanding activities, extreme yoga poses, or close-ups of some stomach muscles accompanied by some ?motivational? captions.

On the surface, it may seem harmless enough, encouraging people to exercise and to eat well. Exercise is good, right? Food is good, right? As a runner, I can?t disagree with either of those sentiments. I enjoy exercising, I sleep better when I?m active, and I make sure to eat in a way that supports all the activity I do because I want to make sure I?m giving my body what it needs.

There are two things I don?t really ever look at, though: the mirror and the scale. Here?s why.

Sometimes weight loss can be a legitimate part of improving one?s health (I dislike the phrase ?getting healthy? because it unavoidably implies that one is lacking in health). But, I vehemently reject the notion that weight loss is an intrinsic part of improving health. I?m far more interested in knowing how fast I can run a mile in or how far I can run, so the time on the stopwatch is way more relevant than the number on the scale.

And then we have the mirror, which is where the problem with this ?fitness inspiration? stuff really comes into play. I?m less concerned about how my body looks than what it?s capable of doing. Unfortunately, that puts me in the minority, and this health/fitness trend has created a whole new brand of body shaming & dissatisfaction. Those ?motivational? phrases I mentioned? There?s one that seems to get a lot of circulation that says, ?Skinny girls look good in clothes. Fit girls look good naked.?

Sorry, but screw that. This is nothing but weightism under the guise of what has been deemed a socially acceptable means of critiquing bodies. I wrote about this before, but when I ran the half marathon in ?November 2011, there were some people who were much more experienced runners who were also much larger individuals than me. I doubt that anyone would think to put their picture on some ?fitspo? because they don?t look like a seasoned Nike triathlete, but they were in excellent health, and they finished their 13.2 mile run at least thirty minutes before I did. And when they crossed that finish line, I bet you they felt pretty damned good about themselves (just like I did!).

There is so much more to our HEALTH than what we see in the mirror and what that the scale says. You cannot assess your health by looking at either. That doesn?t stop people from trying, though. A friend recently linked me to an online company that asks you to send in a photo of yourself in your underpants and their ?experts? will provide you with a fitness assessment and exercise plan. Aside from the fact that this service, which is pretty much exclusively marketed to women, is a little on the creepy side for asking for those kinds of pictures, it reinforces the notion that your health can even be assessed by just a few pictures.

That?s just it, though. This was never about health ? it?s all about body image, and assumption that you are (or should be) dissatisfied with the way you look. The only way to have any kind of standard, though, is to compare your body to other bodies, because if we all looked identical, it wouldn?t be an issue, right? Comparing yourself to others, though, is a surefire way to never, ever be satisfied with what you have or how you look.

Lexie Kite, co-founder of a group called Beauty Redefined, did a really great write-up on why this stuff is so problematic. From her article:

If these images and texts motivate you to respect your body as something that can do so much good, make and reach fitness goals, and maintain health that will keep you happy and able, then they are appropriate for you. If they motivate you to worry about being looked at or to improve parts of your body to meet a beauty ideal you see in media, you must be aware of this. Virginia at?VirginaSoleSmith.com?so concisely says, ?Pay attention to how it makes you feel to be ?inspired? by lots of photos of a largely unattainable beauty ideal. Because that?s what rock hard abs are, after all. Yes, sure, core strength is important for your health. But pictures of bikini-clad, chiseled muscles beaded with sweat? That?s about pretty, not about health.

You can read the full article here.

I think it?s important to call out body shaming and weightism whenever we see it. ?Fitspo? provides a socially acceptable means of both increasing dissatisfaction with our own bodies as well as for critiquing others, and it?s these less obvious ones that I think do the most damage.

Like this post? Stay up to date by ?Liking? my blog on?Facebook, following me on?Twitter?or?Tumblr, subscribe via email, or just leave me a comment to let me know what you think!?

What Food Do We Grow, and Who Gets to Eat It?

Neil Palmer, CIAT

Photo: Neil Palmer, CIAT

One billion people eat too little. One billion others eat too much. One-third of all food harvested around the world is lost or wasted. Our global food production systems need a drastic overhaul.

Need more evidence? Agriculture today contributes one-third of global greenhouse gases emitted. Farming today is depleting soil and water, destroying forests, and hurting the planet?s biodiversity. The more food we grow, the more we destabilize the climate, and the more food we therefore must grow to compensate for crop losses due to droughts, floods, pests and disease.

The world is descending on Rio de Janeiro to map out a vision for a more sustainable and equitable future. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20, is the best place to start figuring out how we feed our world as well. What we grow, how we grow it, and who gets to eat it are issues with profound implications, not just for our global food supply, but for our collective quality of life and the sustainability of the earth?s system. .

Numerous efforts, from the G8, the Obama administration, and the private sector, have committed tens of billions of dollars to bolstering food security and developing sustainable agriculture. Yet, a disconnect remains between these initiatives and the immediate need to scale up innovations that can produce healthy food, feed hungry people, and still protect the environment.

Rio+20 should ensure support for key approaches and innovations, not just the general principles of sustainable development.

In the span of a generation, Brazil transformed itself from a net importer of food to the world?s second-biggest agricultural exporter. Global partnerships and robust government support for agricultural research and development were key. Scientists at Brazil?s national agricultural research institute, EMBRAPA, developed soybean varieties and farming practices suited to the dry and acidic plains of Brazil, making the region a breadbasket for the world.

But innovation has not stopped there. State-of-the-art research looks at everything from preventing food waste to developing nutritionally enriched crop varieties. Now Brazil and other rapidly-emerging economies like China are partnering with developing nations in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere to extend the benefits of agricultural R&D.

But it?s not just about overall investments and approaches. It?s also about financing to scale up solutions that work.

In Punjab, India, hundreds of thousands of farmers produce a nearly continuous supply of rice and wheat for up to 500 million people. In a rush to clear the land for wheat planting after the rice is harvested, farmers set their fields of rice stubble ablaze. Climate change is stoking this rush, as rising temperatures are reducing wheat yields by up to 15 percent, increasing the impetus to plant more crops during the winter months. But this burn depletes soil, causes human health problems, and emits about 12 megatons of carbon dioxide.

Two badly needed alternatives to burning are in early stages of use. The locally manufactured tractor-drawn ?Happy Seeder? machine cuts and lifts the rice straw, sows wheat seeds, and deposits the straw as mulch. Also in the Punjab, a new biomass-based power plant will use paddy stubble as fuel. It will collect farm residue and sell power to the private sector. Brought to scale, these solutions would improve soil fertility and human health, mitigate climate change, and create local jobs as part of a green economy.

In sub-Saharan Africa about 500 million people eat cassava every day, making it the region?s second most important source of carbohydrates. Cassava is also the prime money-making crop for hundreds of thousands of small farmers in Southeast Asia. The hotter the climate, the better it grows, making it a safety net for millions of people as temperatures rise.

But climate change is also bringing increased pest and disease outbreaks that threaten the crop. To fulfill its promise as a failsafe crop in a changing climate, new varieties are needed that further improve drought and cold tolerance, as well as pest and disease resistance. Accelerated improvement of this crop could go a long way to ensuring food security for millions of people in a changing climate.

LAREDO, Texas -- What not to wear?

Nearly 2,900 pair of fake jeans.

Agents in South Texas have announced the seizure of about $194,000 worth of counterfeit-label jeans.

Customs and Border Protection officials in Laredo on Thursday said the jeans were falsely labeled as Levi Strauss & Co. products. Investigators say the case involves alleged trademark infringement against the San Francisco-based company.

Further details on the commercial shipment of clothing, seized at the World Trade Bridge, were not immediately released.

Apple Store Employees Soak Up the Atmosphere, But Not Much Cash

raque writes "The NYTimes is reporting on just how badly Apple Retail employees are being paid. Apple is exploiting its fan base for cheap labor. This is one reason I don't go to Apple Stores if I can avoid it. Stores like NY's Tekserve offer a great shopping experience without so exploiting their workers." Would you rather start at an Apple store for $11.91 an hour (average starting base pay, according to the linked article) and an employee discount, or at Tiffany for $15.60?

Concept sneakers track your dancing moves with smartphone app

6 hrs.

Does your Lindy Hop need a little polishing before you break it out in public??These concept shoes are equipped with accelerometers that detect every step, spin, and tap, relaying your moves to a smartphone app for instant feedback.

The designer, UK-based?Tom Sykes, feels that dance was a great way for young people to exercise and learn, but existing dance products aimed at their demographic (games on the Wii and Xbox, for instance) aren't quite instructive enough. So he set out to make something new.

The result is the GroundWave Shadow, which combines a smart shoes with a smartphone. Each sneaker has an accelerometer built in, and they both connect wirelessly to an special app loaded with dance moves. As you stomp, slide, and turn, the moves are compared in real time?with what you should be doing.

How you are to keep your phone in view while popping and locking isn't addressed, but other than that, the project (still little more than a concept and prototype) seems realistic enough. Many pairs of shoes already come with sensors, like the Nike+ series, which also syncs with an app.

The futuristic shoes may never actually make it to market, but the idea is sound. You can learn more about them at the designer's site.

Study describes molecular machinery that pulls apart protein clumps

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Amyloid fibers are protein aggregates associated with numerous neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease, for which there are no effective treatments.

However, on the flip side, the fibers can also play beneficial, protective roles. In yeast, they are associated with increased survival and the evolution of new traits. In humans, they form biological nanostructures to house pigments and other molecules and may also be central to long-term memory formation and storage. Amyloid fibers are among the most stable protein-based structures in nature, and so when they are detrimental, as in Parkinson's disease, they are notoriously difficult for cells to break down.

In a new study published in PLoS Biologythis week, James Shorter, PhD, assistant professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues address an urgent need to find ways to promote beneficial amyloid fiber assembly or to reverse its pathogenic assembly, at will.

In the paper, Shorter and colleagues define the mechanisms by which small heat-shock proteins (hsp) collaborate with other molecular chaperones to regulate the assembly and disassembly of a beneficial yeast prion (an amyloid that can spread between individuals).

Yeast harbor a declumping protein called Hsp104, which rapidly disassembles amyloid fibers, and this activity is greatly enhanced by small heat shock proteins. Humans and other animals, however, lack Hsp104, and so the puzzle has always been: Can human cells also disassemble these exceptionally stable amyloid fibers?

In this study, Shorter and colleagues establish that in the absence of Hsp104, the yeast small heat shock proteins collaborate with other molecular chaperones to slowly depolymerize the amyloid fibers by removing one fiber subunit at a time from the tips of the fibers. This activity was extremely surprising as traditionally the small heat shock proteins and other molecular chaperones are famous for their duties in preventing protein clumping. They were not previously known to reverse the assembly of exceptionally stable amyloid fibers that were already formed.

Importantly, the proteins of the amyloid-depolymerase machinery is conserved to humans. Thus, even without Hsp104, human small heat shock proteins can collaborate with human molecular chaperones to slowly depolymerize amyloid fibers. For example, it is now clear that human cells harbor the necessary machinery to clear amyloid fibers connected with neurodegenerative disease.

"Remarkably, the human small heat shock protein, HspB5, stimulates other heat shock proteins, Hsp110, Hsp70, and Hsp40, to gradually depolymerize amyloid fibers formed by alpha-synuclein, which are implicated in Parkinson's disease, from their ends on a biologically relevant timescale. Because monomers [shorter segments] are released by this system and not toxic oligomers [longer segments], we believe this is an extremely safe way to dissolve amyloid" explains Shorter.

This newly identified and highly conserved amyloid-depolymerase system could have important therapeutic applications for various neurodegenerative disorders, suggest the researchers. The goal is to stimulate the machinery in humans to pull apart the fibers where and when needed by increasing the expression of heat shock proteins to hopefully pull apart already-formed amyloid fibers. The next step will be to boost the activity of the newly discovered amyloid-depolymerase system, perhaps with drug-like small molecules, in animal models of neurodegenerative disease.

After low-key party, Junior focused on Sonoma - NASCAR News | FOX Sports on MSN

Updated?Jun 19, 2012 11:40 AM ET

?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)

Turns out the victory party for Dale Earnhardt Jr. wasn't much of a party at all.

Earnhardt snapped a 143-race winless streak at Michigan International Speedway, then celebrated at home in North Carolina with friends and family.

''It was good, we went home and some of the family and my friends were there, and we just stood around and talked about the win,'' Earnhardt told The Associated Press on Tuesday. ''We played some music, it was a pretty good time.''

It was hardly the wild party people expected from NASCAR's most popular driver, who was unaware of reports the nightclub he owns in downtown Charlotte gave away free drinks for an hour after Sunday night's win.

''That's cool,'' he said, laughing.

Next up for Earnhardt was his first celebration at Hendrick Motorsports since the organization began marking wins with the ringing of a victory bell throughout the shop. Earnhardt has been with Hendrick since 2008, when he won his only other race with the team - at Michigan four years to the day of Sunday's victory. He said he's never been present when any of his teammates rang the bell.

Once that's over, it will be full focus on Sunday's race at Sonoma Raceway, where Earnhardt has always struggled. In 12 career starts, his average finish is 22.2 and he's led just nine laps on the winding road course. His career best finish is 11th, done three times.

He's set modest goals for this weekend with crew chief Steve Letarte, and is anxious to get on with his summer with return trips to Daytona, Pocono and Michigan looming ahead.

''I've kind of got to reel it in a little bit because of Sonoma, I ain't never had a top 10 there,'' he said. ''I told Steve, `Let's try to go get a top-10, if that's first place or ninth place or whatever, let's just concentrate on going there to get a personal best. And then I think we can move on from that, whatever that result may be.''

But, there's a part of Earnhardt who isn't ready to write off a good day at Sonoma just yet.

Statistically, the start of his season is one of his best ever in the Sprint Cup Series. He's the only driver to complete every lap, and leads the series with 12 top-10s through 15 races.

''There are stats I'm not used to bragging about,'' he said. ''I have to pinch myself just about after race.''

His consistency, coupled with the dominating win at Michigan, now has him mentioned as a serious threat to win the Sprint Cup championship. Earnhardt has never won a Cup title, and hasn't challenged for one since his six-win season in 2004, which he considers the strongest year of his career.

He laughed Tuesday at the sudden buzz over his title chances, which have been validated since Sunday by everyone from current points leader Matt Kenseth to NASCAR president Mike Helton. Earnhardt believes he'll have his hands full with defending champion Tony Stewart, teammate Jimmie Johnson, and Roush Fenway Racing drivers Kenseth and Greg Biffle.

''I think everybody was just kind of drunk with excitement after the race,'' he said. ''Some of my buddies that I race against, Matt and Mr. Helton, everybody was just excited about the end of the race. But I do think we can put our name in the hat. I don't think we are the top team, you've got to look at probably Tony, Jimmie, and Biffle and Matt.

''But we are going to be in the Chase, and we're going to go after it.''

Debate Simmers Over Science of Food Pairing

Well, I didn't mean mixed together.

I'm a plate turner...not quite as bad as when I was young..but I just don't like my foods mixed.

When I'd eat..I'd have multiple things on my plate..but I'd eat all of one thing..finish is, then often, literally turn the plate to eat the next thing in succession (I don't recall if always clockwise or counter clockwise or if there was a pattern...likely just the next best thing)...eat that..then turn.....etc.

As a kid, my favorite thing, was those plates that had compartments..so that one food didn't touch the other food.

Hence, in my example above..of late nights on weekends in college...going to Denny's I'd order spaghetti and meatballs or something...and a side of fries, things that don't generally pair...but was ok for me, since I'd eat all the spaghetti...then, turn my attention to the fries.

I find I don't usually drink and eat at the same time, even to this day. I don't wash my food down.

For years, i've been trying to make a concerted effort to change this at least for wine...so I can do like most say, and enjoy a good wine paired with a meal. I used to get pissed when eating with others...I'd drink a bit of wine that came before the meal...but during the meal, I'd stop drinking...and when the meal was over, since the others hadn't stopped drinking and eating together...the wine often was gone....

While I'm not as bad as I used to be...if I don't think about it...I still do the one food at a time thing to a great extent.

I love to cook, but one of my downfalls is that I've not grown up learning what foods do go well together when planning menus for others. To me, I'm just usually concerned about each individual dish's flavor...but not how they integrate into a meal...when enjoyed by others that eat a bit of this and a bit of that all through the meal.

Palestinian village faces demolition by Israel

SUSIYA, West Bank (AP) ? Palestinians in this hamlet have clung to their arid acres for decades, living without proper electricity or water while Israel provides both to Jewish settlers on nearby hills. But the end now seems near for Susiya: Demolition orders distributed last week by the Israelis aim to destroy virtually the entire village.

Before it does, Israel could encounter an international complication: Several European countries, with traditional Israel ally Germany in the lead, have funded solar panels, wind turbines and wells to make life in area villages more bearable. A diplomatic incident may loom.

"They are turning us into refugees on our own land," said resident Mohammed Nawaja, principal of a 35-student elementary school that consists of four tents slated for removal.

Susiya is one of more than a dozen "unrecognized" Palestinian herding communities in the southern West Bank, a desert-like area close to the Green Line, Israel's pre-1967 war frontier with the West Bank, when it was ruled by Jordan. Its 160-odd residents live in shacks, caves and tents with cement-reinforced walls.

Israeli authorities say the structures are unlicensed. Residents and their supporters say Israel refuses to grant permits as part of a plan to clear the area for future territorial claims ? a charge Israel denies.

Activists say Israeli authorities have issued demolition orders in most of the hamlets over the years, but Susiya faces the most immediate risk of wholesale razing.

At the heart of the matter is the struggle over the 62 percent of the West Bank that remains under full Israeli control ? known as Area C. This area is home to more than 300,000 Jewish settlers, more than double the number of Palestinians living there. More than 90 percent of the West Bank's Palestinians live in the parts of territory adding up to 38 percent of the land, administered by the Palestinian Authority.

The division results from the 1990s autonomy agreements between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization. They were meant to be temporary and lead to a final deal on drawing the borders of a Palestinian state more than a decade ago. Negotiations repeatedly broke down, while the patchwork of jurisdictions in the West Bank remained.

Critics say Israel has blocked virtually all Palestinian development in Area C, while expanding the Jewish settlements there. Only 5 percent of Palestinian requests for building permits in Area C have been granted in recent years, said Alon Cohen-Lifshitz of the Israeli group Bimkom, which calls for fair planning practices.

Planning restrictions and demolition orders are part of a wider Israeli land grab, said Michael Sfard, an attorney for Israeli activists who have installed solar panels and wind turbines with German funding in 18 small communities in the southern West Bank.

"The federal government and its EU partners are watching the situation ... very carefully," said a German Foreign Ministry spokesman Wednesday, on customary condition of anonymity. "They are calling for safeguarding the German and international projects ... and are in close contact with the Israeli authorities."

Israel's Civil Administration, the branch of the military dealing with Palestinians in Area C, said it is working on more than a dozen master plans in the southern West Bank to regularize what it considers Palestinian squatters.

Maj. Guy Inbar, an Israeli spokesman, said some of the work is being held up because Palestinians are not cooperating. He said some of the Palestinians in the southern West Bank would be asked to move as part of such plans, but he declined to give details.

Qamar Assad, an attorney for Susiya, said the villagers have not been offered an alternate site.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said Israel is ready to tackle the core issue of drawing the borders of a Palestinian state, which would also resolve the problems of Susiya and the entire settlement issue.

The Palestinians, who want a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem ? territories Israel captured in the 1967 war ? refuse to resume talks until Israel freezes settlement construction on occupied lands.

Susiya's defenders say it's more vulnerable to displacement than some of the other villages in the area. The village is flanked by a Jewish settlement and the ruins of a centuries-old Jewish town of the same name.

Susiya residents lived in the area of the ruins until it was declared an archaeological site and they were forced to leave in the mid-1980s. Some left for other Palestinian communities, while others settled a few hundred yards away, on land Nawaja says is privately owned by him and his relatives.

Since Israel did not recognize the community, it was not hooked up to electricity or water grids, while the settlement of Susiya and several unauthorized Jewish outposts in the area receive such services, said Sfard.

In 2010, Israel's government designated the Susiya excavation area as a Jewish heritage site and promised funding to turn it into a major tourist attraction. Susiya residents say they've been barred from visiting the site, even though some were born there.

Among the finds are the remains of a synagogue with elaborate floor mosaics, and explanations offered to visitors include many links between the apparent practices of town residents and those described in Jewish scriptures.

Israeli archaeologist Yonathan Mizrahi, who was not involved in the dig, said excavations also yielded remnants of a mosque built atop the synagogue in later years, but that this is not mentioned to visitors. "There is a clear political agenda, to legitimize the settlement (of Susiya) as continuing the Jewish presence of the past," he said.

Last week, Civil Administration inspectors distributed demolition orders for several dozen structures in the village, including the school, a makeshift clinic, residential tents, animal shelters and German-funded solar panels, Assad said.

Some of the orders were initially issued in the 1990s but not implemented, while others are new.

Inbar said Israel is in touch with German officials, and one proposal is to take the solar panels to another area if Susiya residents agree to move there. The German Foreign Ministry official did not address the issue publicly.

The Israeli group that installed the panels, Comet-ME, said demolition orders or their precursors, stop-work orders, have been issued against nine of their 18 sites, including Susiya. The group is providing electricity to 1,300 Palestinians in the area.

Comet-ME said it had hoped to set up six more installations this year but will have to stop work until the legal problems are solved.

Facebook Did Not Confirm Hyper-Local Mobile Ad Product, But Here?s How It Would Target You

Facebook Local AdsFacebook may one day let advertisers target mobile users based on their exact current location, but VP Carloyn Everson did not confirm that such a product is in the works to Bloomberg, Facebook tells me. The New York media company misinterpreted statements from Everson, who merely said you could imagine the product evolution afforded by a mobile phone's location awareness. So we won't say Facebook is "readying" such a product, but that doesn't mean it won't emerge eventually. let's imagine how it could look. Real-time hyper-local Facebook advertising could allow local businesses to advertise to people in sight of their brick-and-mortar store, or let travel companies target people when they're away from their home city. And competition to reach those out-and-about users coud drive up ad prices and earn Facebook more money.

Debt Collectors Now Going After Former Hollywood Video Employees

Zeke once worked for now bankrupt and defunct Hollywood Video. Employees had special accounts allowing them to rent older movies (more than a few weeks old) for free and not have to pay late fees when they didn't bring them back. Zeke is sure that he wouldn't hallucinate free movie rentals, but the collection agency that sent him the letter insists that this policy never existed, and that it's up to him to prove that he didn't owe the company $28.95 in late fees at the time he quit.

Guess who's at it again?

I just got a collections letter from [a collection agency] on behalf of Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery. Apparently I returned Hancock incredibly late, enough to have $28.95 in late fees. I'm actually not sure the store was open at that point, but I am sure that if I did rent the movie it was while I was an employee and thus free, as I went to Netflix right after quitting.

[Redacted] Collections doesn't believe me, nor do they believe employees had free rentals. [From their FAQ for Hollywood Video customers:]

Q:"I was an employee of Hollywood Video and didn't get charged late fees, how do I have a balance due?"

A: Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery had no such policy allowing employees to rent for free or have no late fees.

If memory serves, it was account type 3, but I could check with one of my managers on that. It was even coded to include the 2 week waiting period for movies to go free for employees.

[The agency] does say, kindly, that I can just provide a receipt showing a zero balance upon returning the movie. That might be a problem, as I know my store didn't print receipts on return, nor am I sure of any that do.

I'm not so sure there are many people who have receipts from video stores from 2009 to begin with, but the fact the receipt they want doesn't exist makes it a bit trickier, doesn't it?

I'm already writing in with my dispute, but what else can I do to get rid of this and make sure nobody gets scammed into paying what they don't owe?

We previously noted that these old Hollywood Video debts will not be reported to credit bureaus, so that's something. Make sure that's still the case, and then use one of these two letters to dispute the debt or make the collector prove that they really own it.

To keep others from paying bills they don't really owe, contact as many of your former co-workers as you can, and... well, you could send them a link to this post, or just let them know the name of the collection agency and to watch out for bogus zombie late fees.

(AP) ? The former neighborhood watch volunteer who killed Trayvon Martin told his wife to buy bulletproof vests for them and for his attorney, according to jailhouse calls released Monday.

"As uncomfortable as it is, I want you wearing one," George Zimmerman told his wife. Zimmerman was wearing a bulletproof vest when he left jail after posting bond. His attorney, Mark O'Mara, has reported receiving threats.

The calls, released by prosecutors, also detail how Zimmerman instructed his wife to transfer money from bank accounts and could play a crucial role in his second bond hearing next week.

Zimmerman was released on $150,000 bond in April, several days after the calls took place. At his bond hearing, his wife, Shellie, testified that she didn't know how much money had been raised from a website created for his legal defense. She also testified that they had limited funds because she was in nursing school full time and Zimmerman wasn't working.

Prosecutors say the calls show George and Shellie Zimmerman knew that roughly $135,000 had been raised by the site. The judge in the case revoked George Zimmerman's bond and ruled the couple had deceived the court. Zimmerman has been back in jail for almost a month.

Shellie Zimmerman was arrested last week on a perjury charge and released from jail after posting bond. The third-degree felony is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Her 28-year-old husband is charged with second-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense during the confrontation with the 17-year-old Martin in a gated community in Sanford, Fla. The case sparked protests across the country when Zimmerman wasn't arrested at first and led to nationwide debate over race and self-defense laws.

In one recorded call, Zimmerman tells his wife and sister how to change a computer password at a credit union so they can move funds around.

In another, Shellie Zimmerman said that money raised from the website was also being used to pay off bills. The couple also talked about how they would whisk Zimmerman away from the Seminole County Jail once he was released in April, and discussed using a rental car to drive to a hotel parking garage. There, they would change into another rental car to throw off anybody who tried to follow him.

Shellie Zimmerman told her husband that the website had crashed because of supporters leaving words of encouragement, as well as donations.

"Wow, that is awesome," Zimmerman said. "Those people need to start vocalizing themselves."

Prosecutors originally had planned to release 151 of Zimmerman's jailhouse calls, but O'Mara objected. A hearing over their release is set at the same time as Zimmerman's bond hearing next week.

"It is our contention that the calls are not only irrelevant to the charges against Mr. Zimmerman, but they could jeopardize friends and family of Mr. Zimmerman who are unrelated to the case," O'Mara said on a website for the legal defense.

O'Mara also is objecting to the release of statements made by a witness only identified as "Witness (hash)9."

"It is highly likely that the uncorroborated issues constituting the substance of Witness (hash)9's statement will serve to reignite and potentially enhance the widespread public hostility toward Mr. Zimmerman," O'Mara said in a filing released Monday.

Police: Canada suspect had $330k in cash

The man wanted in an armored car heist at a Canadian university that left three armed guards dead was carrying $330,000 in cash and no passport when he was arrested by U.S. border officials, police said Sunday.

Travis Baumgartner was stopped Saturday near a border crossing in Lynden, Washington, southwest of Abbotsford, British Columbia.

He was driving a Ford F-150 truck with the Alberta license plate that police had been seeking, Police Supt. Bob Hassel said at a news conference. Hassel said the suspect tried to get through the border with his driver's license. He had the cash in a backpack.

Thomas Schreiber of U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the suspect didn't have a gun and was arrested without incident.

Baumgartner, 21, had been on the run since Friday when four armed guards were gunned down, three of them fatally. He faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Hassel said the injured guard remains in critical condition.

Baumgartner was the fifth member of a G4S Cash Solutions crew that was re-loading bank machines at a University of Alberta mall and residence where the shooting happened, police said. The armored truck was found abandoned but running not far from the security company's offices. Dead at the scene were Michelle Shegelski, 26; Eddie Rejano, 39; and Brian Ilesic, 35.

Police had launched an international manhunt to find Baumgartner. Hassel said Baumgartner is currently being held at a police detachment in Langley, British Columbia, and is expected to be transferred back to Edmonton sometime in the next week.

G4S Cash Solutions spokeswoman Robin Steinberg said the company would conduct its own investigation into the shooting. Baumgartner had only been on the job for three months.

"We applaud the dedication of the Edmonton Police Service, and other law enforcement agencies in apprehending Travis Baumgartner today," Steinberg said in a statement. "Our thoughts remain with the families and friends of the victims and also with the Baumgartner family."

Baumgartner's mother issued a statement Friday pleading for her son to surrender and apologizing for an argument they had.

Such shootings are rare in Canada, where residents are nervous about anything that might indicate they are moving closer to U.S. levels of gun violence. The oil boom town of Fort McMurray, Alberta, however, often has drug-related shootings, and Vancouver often has gang shootings. Gunfire at Toronto's most prominent mall this month left two dead and several injured and a shooting at an Edmonton club in 2006 left three dead.

Steven Munz, a close friend of Baumgartner, had said that Baumgartner had been on the job for only three months and wanted to eventually become a police officer, but said Baumgartner didn't believe he had what it took. Munz said he had noticed a change in his personality in the last year, and that he had been irrational at times.

In a profile on the dating website Plenty of Fish, Baumgartner bills himself as an armored car guard interested in video gaming. A photo shows him shirtless holding a cell phone. He says he has a laid back personality and a "10" physique.

"I'm a great guy. We don't come around often," he writes.

But his Facebook page is much darker, quoting the character of the anarchist Joker from the movie "Dark Knight" and musing about "popping people off."

Baumgartner lived with his mother and step-sister in Sherwood Park, a bedroom community just east of Edmonton.
