The Jefferson County Commission presented the city of Birmingham with a $1 million check Monday, part of a $3 million National Emergency Grant from the federal government for storm relief.
The funding will be used to stimulate job growth throughout the county, especially for those who lost their jobs as a result of the April tornadoes.
??We are not going to just rebuild the storm damaged area but we are going to make it better than before and give them the opportunity for employment," Bell said.
Bell said Birmingham has moved passed debris removal and will need workers for new storm related projects. Pay for employees hired through Birmingham could be up to $11 an hour.
?Now we get buildings that need to be torn down, homes and other structures,? he said. ?Many of the individuals will be put to work in that area."
People applying for these jobs must either
-Be a dislocated worker
-Be unemployed due to the tornado
-Laid off from a job and unemployed for 15 months
Applications for Birmingham will be accepted at the Birmingham Public Works Department. All others should contact Jefferson County.
